Episode 7 follows the story of a gay couple, Andy (Brandon Kyle Goodman) and Tobin (Brandon Kyle Goodman), agreeing to have a baby. They end up with an open adoption with Karla (Olivia Cooke), who chooses to be homeless. Their first meeting arrives in a cafe, and Karla orders a range of menu items, taking advantage of the capitalist couple. What I enjoyed about Karla is how casual she was about the situation — she’s having a baby, and because her world is not fit to raise a child, she’s doing the logical thing by allowing a suitable couple to have he/she.
“Hers Was A World of One” offers a dynamic of capitalism mixed with the resistance against it. Andy and Tobin are openly liberal and agree on a fairer society, but they are met with an extreme version of their beliefs. Karla returns each trimester, and during the end of the last phase, she moves in with Andy and Tobin in preparation for the birth.
As days go by, the pressure of having Karla in their home increases — she places incenses around the living room, leaves clothes lying around, and continues to drink despite being pregnant. One night, Karla brings a man in from the street named Mick, played by Ed Sheeran, and Tobin finally loses it — accusing her of having zero impact on the world by the way she lives. His harsh, heated words brought perspective to both of them, while Andy stays on the sideline, neutral.
It turns out, having sex with Mick induced Karla, and the moment of truth finally comes. Andy waits outside the birth room, but Tobin stays with Karla, holding her hand and offering words of encouragement. Karla bravely pushes through while Tobin enjoys every second of the birth. He fell in love straight away. Tobin unselfishly asks Karla if she wants to change her mind — but she knows her life is not fit for a child.
Modern Love Season 1, Episode 7, “Hers Was A World of One” closes with Tobin telling stories to their daughter about her mother, and how their worlds are opposites but also similar. I truly enjoyed this episode, that tackled various themes; a gay couple adopting, open adoption, capitalism, homelessness and the mother’s bond with a child.
