Summary
Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis is absolutely nailed on. An easy contender for one of the best stand-ups released on Netflix in 2020.
Netflix Stand-up Special Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis will be released on the platform on March 3, 2020.
Although Netflix has many flaws, what I truly enjoy about this platform is that it introduces us to stand-up comedians we otherwise wouldn’t have known about unless we tried really hard to find someone new. Netflix is becoming a beacon for new comedy, and I’m here for it. I’d never heard of Taylor Tomlinson before, and now I want to see more of her stand-up.
I believe I have a new favorite stand-up comedian.
The main theme of Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis is what the title suggests — a quarter-life crisis. We often become so accustomed to older comedians talking about the aching realities of later life, while the younger comedians burnish themselves in the flair of the younger, and apparently cooler, way of living. Taylor Tomlinson is in the spirit of all those 20-year-olds who cannot figure any s*** out, and that’s okay because it isn’t time to pull on our big pants yet — life is oddly ironic.
Taylor Tomlinson dives into her sex life, parenting and growing up realizing that love is not what it’s cracked up to be. She delves into how she prefers a man who claims they are patient to have sex, which evidently “turns her on”. Her opening gambit discusses how her ex used to tell her how he nearly got another woman’s number and heralded it as a moment where he could have had other options but he didn’t; the result of this story is wholesome and infectious, roping the audience in straight away. Taylor’s role-playing and acting is key to her comedy while she brings out all these scenarios. Comedians that can act and teeter the audience on the edge of a joke while playing a character tend to have longevity in their sets, and Taylor absolutely nails this stand-up from start to finish.
Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis is absolutely hilarious and it deserves plaudits. It is the best stand-up on Netflix so far this year, by far. Well, it is only February, but it is hard to get a 5-star review on this website.
Live your 20s like Taylor.
