Summary
“Ball of Twine (Kansas) Part 3” could have done with a bit more explanation, but perhaps they work better without it.
This recap of 50 States Of Fright episode 6, “Ball of Twine (Kansas) Part 3”, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.
So after the body horror of the previous episode, Susan is launching an assault on the townsfolk, and they are all made of twine, and it seems that when they are attacked they can just knit themselves back together again. It makes them pretty much indestructible and I have to wonder if that means they never die, or maybe they continue to age and eventually pass away? Who knows, it’s one of a multitude of things that goes unexplained. Anyway, Susan manages to make her way to the house of the twine, concluding that Amelia is in there, and starts to Nicholson her way into the heart of the big ball of string.
Once again, we have to suspend disbelief here, as the townsfolk outside, are all held off from getting to Susan, as she has barricaded the doors to the attraction, the glass doors, and they make no attempt to break through. I know, a minor point but it did annoy me slightly.
Susan meanwhile has made a maximum effort to get to the center of the problem, where she finds Amelia, and the two dead daughters of the creator of the ball, and attempts to wake her daughter and get to safety. However, the twine kicks into life and starts knitting itself back together, sealing mum and daughter inside.
A cutaway narration that we have seen at the start of each chapter, with the Sheriff relaying the story that mum and daughter had been reunited and drove off into the distance.
Our unseen interviewer reveals the fact that many people have disappeared in this area, but this is dismissed as the Sheriff cheerily invites the interviewer to come and visit the twine.
What exactly was going on here is never really discussed. Why were the two daughters trapped in the ball and what exactly was the twine meant to be doing? How had it managed to infect the townsfolk? Was it alien? Was it supernatural? How long is a piece of string? Well, it’s never explained, but I suppose that for some people, that will add to the allure.
I could have done with a little more explanation, but I suppose these little slices of horror may be best served with as little explanation as possible. As a viewer, you will either run with this and appreciate the horror or reject it as bad writing.
