How does Japan Sinks: 2020 season 1, episode 6, “An Oracle” open?

Mother is told that the elderly man is growing more violent due to his morphine withdrawals. She’s asked why she is letting him live and she explains that she wants to keep things peaceful until the boy’s birthday festival is over. The elderly man is seeing visions of his grandchild. Episode 6 sees community not lasting too long as more danger strikes.

Morse code

Ayumu attends to the patient she has been spending time with again. He notices that he’s tapping his railings because he can’t talk and she believes he is doing Morse code. He starts blinking his eyes to talk to her and she uses an app to translate. He tells her that a big earthquake is coming and that it is dangerous in Shan city. Ayumu realizes the man is Mr. Onodera, a geologist and a submarine pilot who predicted Japan would sink.

A warning

Ayumu tries to warn the others but no-one will listen. She tells Mari and she believes her but that they must verify it first. Meanwhile, Go picks up a meat cleaver but then hears weird noises and realizes the elderly man is locked up — he wants Kite to help him. Ayumu continues to warn people in the community as the festival is ongoing. Mari confirms the information is from Mr. Onodera who predicted Japan would sink.

Another earthquake

Kite sees the elderly man in his prison cell and then another earthquake hits. Mother makes the decision to evacuate everyone and open the gates. She then catches someone trying to steal all the gold. Suddenly, there’s a shoot-out. The mother is shot so she wants to see the boy Daichi who suddenly talks. But as the boy talks, rubble falls and kills him. The elderly man joins the commotion and states he could not save him — he accepts the boy wasn’t his grandson and kneels next to the Mother.

How does Japan Sinks: 2020 season 1, episode 6, “An Oracle” end?

The group gets in the truck to leave but Daniel states he wants to stay. Mari gives him a photo of them all as a group and drives off. Kite puts the elderly man over his shoulders but he bites him and tells him to run. Kite drops him morphine and runs. The group pick Kite up with a truck — on the way out the elderly man uses his arrows to defend them as they leave. Mother believes the boy died because they need to survive but the community wants to stay with her. She tells them not to throw their lives away so easily. Mother dies in the earthquake with her community with her. Episode 6 is thankfully the end of these filler-type chapters, allowing the characters to endure their dangerous journey to survive.
