The opening of The New Legends of Monkey season 2, episode 8, “The Real Tripitaka”

The episode beings with Monica meeting another monk and praying. She asks the monk how long he’s being here and he says six weeks. Monica states the monk can’t leave him “here” forever and sets what looks like a deceased man on fire. The monk turns around and says “Tripitaka!”. As the title suggests, we saw this coming. While Dreglon moves through the woods with guards, they are being quickly captured one by one by Monkey King and co. As Monkey King is about to fight Dreglon, Monica shows up and she says she wants Tripitaka. She takes them to Lion Heart Rock — this is where the Rebels are.

We have Gods on our side

Tripitaka is introduced to the Real Tripitaka and he’s alive. Tripitaka gives the Real Tripitaka a corrupt scroll created by Mycelia which alarms him. Monica tells the group that they know their enemy’s plans and it’s a good time to escape. But the real Tripitaka says they do not really need to escape because they have Gods on their side. Monica disagrees at first but she does not want to overrule the real Tripitaka. Tripitaka asks Dreglon about Hagfish’s plans — he tells her that there is no way of winning this war without going through Gorm.

The bounty hunter

Tripitaka tells Monica that the real Tripitaka is wrong and that he will have them all killed. Monica tells her to know her place. Tripitaka then learns that Kaedo Zef is a bounty hunter paid by Monica which is a bit of a surprise in the story. Kaedo Zef tells Tripitaka that it’s just business but she’s fuming at him, stating he sold her out and they are going to die. Episode 8 brings this notion that the Real Tripitaka is compounded by his own beliefs.

A bit of training

Real Tripitaka introduces his people to the Gods and Monkey King starts training them for battle. He is not really good at training them though as he keeps on outsmarting them and it’s an unfair advantage — his lack of self-awareness and intelligence continues to be the comedy of the series. Tripitaka asks Sandy to go deep into her powers; when she starts concentrating, everyone starts crying nearby — Sandy asks Monkey King what is special about her. She’s clearly concerned about what her powers consist of.

The ending of The New Legends of Monkey season 2, episode 8, “The Real Tripitaka”

Tripitaka tells the Real Tripitaka that Hagfish has all the scrolls and he’s controlling Gorm but the group laugh at her. Real Tripitaka is confident of victory with the Gods by his side but Tripitaka states he doesn’t have the weapons to win the battle. But then the Real Tripitaka brings out loads of weapons — Tripitaka is mortified, exclaiming that anything created by the Shadow Scroll will turn on its creator. Monica tells Tripitaka to stop talking and tells her there is only one Tripitaka. Monkey King agrees and tells her they have to stand and fight.

As Tripitaka feels defeated, Kaedo Zef passes her the keys to the Tavern, passed on by Monica. Tripitaka says she has a good life but Kaedo Zef states she cannot trust anyone. The pair fight briefly but Kaedo Zef says he needs to take her back to the tavern at first light. Sandy senses something and asks Tripitaka what the plan is. Sandy and Tripitaka infiltrates the caves and speaks to Dreglon and lets him free. Dreglon believes she was Hagfish. Kaedo Zef, Pigsy, Sandy and Tripitaka head to the woods — Kaedo Zef has a cover story to how they got away. Monkey King also joins them. Episode 8 feels like the lead up to a battle so let’s hope we are not disappointed.
