The opening
Episode 6 opens up with a mother of a missing child, explaining how difficult it is to move on, desperate for answers. The episode then moves to Harlem, New York, 1989 — the documentary explains how it was a tough area during this time, a very violent place.
A close family in a difficult neighborhood
Allison Dansby (mother of Christopher and Levon Dansby — three and two years old) explains how her family used to live in the Martin Luther King Towers. Christopher was very attached and close to his mother.
30-minute window
“Stolen Kids” highlights the trauma that can follow when parents lose their children.
It flits to May 18, 1989. Allison and Christopher went to the park. The park was very crowded. Allison went to the store, and she left Christopher with her mother. 30 minutes later, Allison returns, and they cannot find Christopher. There were five family members in the park watching the kids, and 2-year old Christopher went missing. There was a lot of shock and panic.
A full police investigation
Cops and helicopters were surveying the entire area. They got scuba divers in case Christopher accidentally drowned in the lake — the police brought dogs to find Christopher’s scent. The police did consider if this was a family member as well due to a possible custody issue; Christopher’s father was in Florida at the time, but he did return to take police questioning — there was no indication that he was involved, so the police were back to square one. The police also looked into drugs as the mother used to be a user — the auntie believes the police were diverting their attention to the family to shift blame.
Another kid missing
“Stolen Kids” moves to three months later. Rosa Glover tells the audience that her son Shane was also taken from the same park. It happened on August 10, 1989. Rosa explains how two children insisted they wanted to play with Shane and as she sat on the bench, her son was gone. The police tried everything to find them, but both cases for the children went cold. They interviewed the children that wanted to play with Shane as they felt they were decoys — the parents of the kids were also interviewed. There was no indication they were involved either.
The documentary explains how it’s not uncommon for children that young to be found. They explored the possibility of how the children were placed in a baby ring in the black market. Harlem is densely populated, so it’s not surprising how it was difficult to find them. There’s a strong theory that the children were kidnapped by a person who couldn’t have children themselves — so it’s likely that they are alive.
The ending
There is hope — in 1987, Carlina White, a newborn, was abducted in a hospital by a woman dressed as a nurse. In January 2011, Carlina White returned — she was known as Nancy Nett. When she had her own baby, she realized her birth certificate was fake. NYPD obtained a DNA sample and realized it was Carlina Nancy. The woman who kidnapped her was sent to prison. “Stolen Kids” shows how they have the technology now to show age progression.
