“Ice Breaker” sees love triangles form and rivalries heat up as a looming charity game becomes the centre of the conversation.

This recap of Netflix’s Zero Chill season 1, episode 4, “Ice Breaker”, contains spoilers.

With Kayla sneaking Jacob into her father’s car, she has to hide him in the house quickly. This includes doing the laundry, so their parents do not enter the kitchen. However, hiding Jacob doesn’t work for too long as the family finds him. They have to convince both parents that they are ready to figure skate together — Kayla wants to secure her skating future and fast. When they get to the ice rink, Kayla’s mother Jenny tells her it isn’t happening because Jacob is getting a new partner. Kayla believes she can’t have her dreams, but her brother can.

At this point, the parents are too transparent on who has more of a priority.

Later on, Sky warns Kayla about Jacob and whether he’s actually ready to partner with her. Kayla confronts him about it, and he tells her it’s about his mother.

Orcas is in town, and an old friend is staying over

As for the hockey, there’s a charity game, and Orcas are in town to play the Hammers. There’s a tinge of rivalry in the air. An old friend named Carson will be stopping at Mac’s house. Mac isn’t too pleased about it as they are foes. Mac protests to his parents regarding the arrangement. Carson introduces himself to Sky and tries arranging a date with her, which makes Mac defensive.

Ava in disguise

Mac learns Ava likes to play hockey, so he puts her in the mascot outfit so she can take part in the charity event. Anton Hammarstrom falls for it and asks Ava to think of new moves for the charity game. Ava is upset, believing her father likes the mascot more than her.

There’s plenty of insecurities regarding parenting in this series.

Chaos

And then chaos ensues in Zero Chill season 1, episode 4.

Carson continues to make a move on Sky, but Mac tells her that she isn’t interested. Meanwhile, Anton is annoyed that the charity event is turning into a party and blames it on Kayla, but Jenny defends her daughter. Things get heated between Carson and Mac, so Ava tackles Carson to the floor, and her mascot head falls off — her parents send her home.

Outside, Bear also wants to defend Sky and explains to her that he didn’t want to lose her as he was scared, so he kept his distance. He’s happy that she got better and wants to be friends with her. The pair agree to walk home together, and Mac watches from a distance. Bear and Sky have a romantic history.

The ending

Anton praises Mac for his passion for the game and his spark — he wants him to explode his spark at the charity game. He hugs him and asks him to make her proud. Ava sees the hug and gets angry that her father gives others attention over her. She grabs a notebook from Mac’s coat with the team’s tactics and gives it to Carson.
