“Attachment” once again squares Nicky off with Zhilan, and the stakes become higher than ever on the road to the finale.

This recap of Kung Fu season 1, episode 11, “Attachment”, contains spoilers.

All seems well in “Attachment”, which means it won’t be for very long. Henry and Nicky, now an item, frolicking in the community center almost feels like foreshadowing; it’s a bit too much happiness than this show tends to allow its characters. Even the constant flirting can’t distract from the fact that pursuing the Forge will inevitably lead to a confrontation between Nicky and Zhilan, and Kung Fu episode 11 delivers that and then some.

It’s bad news for everyone in “Attachment”, really, since Ryan is still reeling from having broken up with Joe, and Mei-Li and Jin are closing the restaurant since they can’t afford the increased rent. And to make matters worse, Zhilan and Kerwin are only one weapon away from the full collection. We’re approaching the end of the season, folks, and you can really feel it now.

The final missing weapon turns out to be in the care of a Chinese K-pop star named Simon Lau, a fellow descendent and guardian who has weaved Mei-Xue’s lyric into one of his hits and just so happens to be performing in Las Vegas the next day. Stealing a couple of tickets for the meet-and-greet, Nicky and Henry confront Simon, who claims to believe the whole story is a fairytale and accuses them of being the collectors who recently contacted him about the weapon in his possession. Uh-oh. Simon isn’t taking the whole thing seriously enough and gets Nicky and Henry turfed out, retiring to his private quarters for a meeting with… Zhilan and Kerwin.

Naturally, this all goes wrong rather quickly, though on the upside it does deliver perhaps the best fight sequence in the season so far, so there’s a silver lining. Anyway, Zhilan and Kerwin kill Simon’s security team and are more than prepared to kill him until Nicky and Henry bursting into the casino causes a distraction. Kerwin goes to deal with them while Zhilan corners Simon, but he whips out the weapon and proves that his whole “fairytale” angle was just a ruse, since he’s a pretty highly-trained and competent fighter. So, we get a fight between Zhilan and Simon, another between Nicky and Henry, and then another between Nicky, Simon, and Zhilan, until Kerwin is able to snatch the upper hand by threatening to kill a defeated Henry. The villains leave with the weapon, Simon dies, and Henry gets Nicky out of there. Kung Fu season 1, episode 11 handles all this admirably well. There’s some great choreography, a clear sense of spatial continuity, and real dramatic stakes. It’s good stuff.

It doesn’t feel good for Nicky, obviously, since she immediately blames herself for Simon’s death. However, his parting message gives them their next clue, which is a map to the Forge hidden a constellation, itself hidden in a sword’s scabbard. They’re back in business.

And there’s even good news back at home. Mei-Li and Jin, with help from Ryan persuading them to embrace traditionalism and go down fighting, have decided to keep the restaurant open. For just a little while, everyone is together, safe, and happy. Unfortunately, it isn’t going to last.
