Summary

Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom is a frantic, exciting, and action-filled ending to the trilogy. It serves the current storyline well while bringing hope to fans that new stories will be created.

This review of the Netflix anime series Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom contains no spoilers. The series is part of a trilogy.

My main issue with part 2 is that it was a flagrant middling chapter; while it had the usual fights, declarations of war, twists, and everything else you’d expect from a Transformers story, it never sold itself as a refreshing continuation to part 1. I suppose it’s not unlikely that the middle chapter feels like the one in limbo. However, the third and final chapter, Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom, proves that this trilogy is worth our time.

It’s transparent that the Transformers is vastly in-depth, and the films do not give it the desired credit. The third part of this trilogy reminds audiences that these robotic creatures do not solely exist to protect earth; their entire race, being, and existence are on the line. Kingdom is the end-of-the-road for Optimus Prime and Megatron. The frantic race to locate the Allspark leads to a strange planet — the stakes are heightened, but it’s coupled with an added element; the future decides to come into play, bringing an extra dimension to the story that changes everything in a short space of time.

Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom is not about protecting Autobots and Decepticons anymore; there’s a full-circle view of the present and the future and what it means for the current war. Our lead characters have plenty of soul-searching in the final part — not only does Cybertron need restoring (the ultimate mission), but they are dealing with an exciting unknown. The writers decided to save the best until last.

As we are aware, Transformers: War for Cybertron is a trilogy in its own right, but the final part decides to play ball. Rather than only finding conclusions to the core war, it brings in plenty of subplots and easter eggs to hint at a new trilogy. The world-building does not exhaust itself, rather it expands our imaginations, and eager fans will be excited for what’s to come if Netflix decides to commission more stories.

What is uniquely refreshing is how this trilogy has rejuvenated our excitement for this universe. In the past, I have vocally expressed my disappointment with the films, and I know very little of the canon. While this action-anime series has felt ludicrous at times with its over-complication of the plot and its frequent use of exposition, the trilogy has proved this story can exist in better formats. Maybe it doesn’t need to be tent-pole action films. Sometimes existing naturally in one medium is all it needs to be. I’m sure some fans will disagree, but franchises have a habit of putting their fingers in all pies, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom is a frantic, exciting, and action-filled ending to the trilogy. It serves the current storyline well while bringing hope to fans that new stories will be created.
