This article discusses the ending of the Netflix film The Swarm (2021), so will contain major spoilers.
The Swarm is a French horror film that follows Virginie (Suliane Brahim) and her family as they try to make their locust farm a viable way to sustain themselves following the death of her husband. Seemingly by accident, Virginie discovers that her locusts thrive on a diet of blood, and so does everything she can to give them the nutrition they crave with fatal consequences.
Netflix’s The Swarm ending explained
As you can probably guess, giving a swarm of locusts the chance to develop a taste for blood ends badly here. Virginie’s daughter Laura (Marie Narbonne) is not privy to her mother’s new agricultural techniques, so when she makes the shocking discovery in the middle of the locusts’ lunchtime, an intervention staged by her and neighboring farmer Karim (Sofian Khammes) is what follows.
When Virginie refuses to acknowledge the issues with her livestock feeding methods, Karim takes drastic steps to burn down the pods that house her precious locusts, which ends in disaster as they clearly do not all perish in the flames. Despite taking shelter inside the house, Karim meets his end by being eaten alive by the pests after they break through the windows thanks to the sheer number of them.
Laura is forced to flee, but with the swarm hungry for blood, it would appear that it’s only a matter of time before they catch up with her and pick her clean in the same way you would a chicken drumstick. Fortunately for Laura, her mother comes to her senses and realizes that the locusts need to be drawn away from her daughter if she is to survive the swarm. As a result, she cuts her hands and covers herself in her own blood, seemingly sacrificing herself to the swarm in a bid to save her little girl. However, by some miracle, the locusts suddenly lose their appetite, and Virginie is reunited with her daughter, no more harmed by her livestock than she was prior to her little intervention.
