The plot keeps thickening, folks, but this was quite an underwhelming chapter.

After the last episode, Mabel was truly in the spotlight, but if this comedy series has taught the audience anything, we know it will be a series of comedy rabbit holes. None of us truly believed that Mabel is the killer, but it’s good to amuse that notion for one chapter.

Only Murders in the Building season 1, episode 5 recap

As episode 5 begins, Mabel is followed by her old friend Oscar who she has not seen for 10 years — he was in prison. Meanwhile, Oliver is excitable because Mabel is the new suspect after learning that she knew Tim Kono. Oliver and Charles follow her, feeling they are embarking on a twist for the podcast.

And so, Mabel and Oscar catch up — Oscar reveals he was there that day Tim Kono died. If we revert our attention to episode 1, Oscar is the “tie-dye guy” that Charles and Oscar became obsessed with as they saw him running up the stairs of their apartment block. While following Mabel, Oliver and Charles research Zoe Cassidy who died in 2010 after been pushed off the top of the building — she was friends with Mabel and Tim Kono. Charles believes Mabel is in danger, but Oliver is sceptical.

With Mabel hanging on to the clue she received, Oscar figures out that it leads to the tattoo parlour they all used when younger to get matching tattoos. However, Oscar does not want to pursue the investigation — he wants to spend time with Mabel as it has been so long since he has done anything normal. Mabel is desperate for answers, so she heads inside the tattoo parlour on her own. When inside, Oliver and Charles follow her. They are upset that Mabel lied.

The ending

Mabel is sorry and admits she knew Tim Kono as a friend, which is why she was obsessed with solving the murder. Oscar has a change of heart and enters the tattoo parlour — he tells them all that he went to Tim Kono’s the night he was killed to fight him, but then he heard a gunshot. He’s adamant that he did not kill him. The tattooist then reveals that Tim suspected he would get killed and that it was linked to jewellery — Mabel then empties a bag of expensive jewellery from Tim’s apartment.

The plot keeps thickening, folks, but this was quite an underwhelming chapter.
