Throughout The In Between, we see Tessa trying to figure out why Skylar was contacting her. We see her attempt to run down every avenue to find the answers. During this journey, Tessa struggles mightily with her health post-accident. But she is so determined to get the answers she is seeking from him that she forgets to care for herself.
Once we reach the end of the film, we see the entire accident reimagined (a lot more brutal than one would have thought). Finally, the two are reunited, and Skylar wants to share the message that he loves her.
We see the couple reunited in The In Between. From here, we get a montage of the couple living the life they wanted to. We see Tessa and Skylar roaming through Italy, wondering about the world as one, leading to the moment in a beachfront house where he confronts her with the idea of moving on without him.
The film ends moments after we are on the beachfront. Tessa and Skylar see an image of Tessa on the hospital bed. Skylar tells her he loves her and says he will miss her but gives her the parting words, ‘Go give us a happy ending here.’ From here, we see Tessa giving a speech about herself at a college. She talks about her journey and what she has learned along the way. She used Skylar’s parting words as motivation to live the way he wanted her to live when he was alive and even more so now that he was gone.
Tessa finally uses her pictures to tell the story through her speech. She touches on living with the ghosts within each of us, not running from the ghosts of trauma, unfulfilled dreams, or lost love. She talks about how she spent so long ignoring these invisible spirits and running from them, and no matter how hard she tried, they kept coming back.
The ending shows that she learned from the losses she experienced in life. How she will no longer run from the things that haunt her, she will face them head-on and use them to motivate her to live the life she was meant to live. Her ability to be free of these chains let her showcase her talents to the world.
