The Lake season 1, episode 6 recap

You have to love a show that uses a Croatian bootleg of season four of Dharma & Greg to fill in awkward silence to make a boy kiss you because the alternative, again, is Dharma & Greg. When Billie makes Killian an offer he can’t refuse, he is about to kiss her when Wayne and Jayne’s hellcat spawns walk in. They pull out the old Ouija board until they need to refill their Ziplock bag of weed. Olive leaves to get some, but she is gone for so long they check outside. However, they find an arrow on the outside wall by the door holding up a sign. It says, “One down, five to go.”

Maybe The Lake is a horror revenge story, after all.

When they attempt to leave and make it to the docks, two hooded individuals with crossbows show up, and Killian hits one with a rock. They run back into the house. Riley shows up a few minutes later, hyperventilating about what are those crossbow freaks doing outside? (Of course, they don’t notice Riley is wearing an awfully similar coat to the others). When Riley, Killian, and Billie make a run for his boat, they see it is now gone. As the debate on what to do, Riley gets an arrow shot into his right leg.

Of course, this all seems so out of place for the series and since I don’t think The Lake is going to morph into spoof episodes like Community any time soon, this is a setup. As Billie finally kisses Killian, she realizes this is a prank inspired by the film Cabin in the Woods. There is a tradition called Prank Day, and Justin has brought it back for Billie. The hooded ones are played by Justin, Maisy, Victor, Opal, Riley, Wayne, and Jayne. (Unfortunately for Wayne, he is the one who took the rock to the face). Instead of having a lovely time, Maisy is worried that Billie and Justin are having so much fun they will come back next summer. So, she wants to scare Billie so much that she will never want to return to the lake again.

The ending

Eventually, Billie calls everyone out on the prank, and the parents lift their hoods. (Except, poor Wayne has trouble because he now has a concussion and is drooling from his mouth). Olive helped with the prank because her sisters stole all her weed. Riley helped because, even though he was mad, Justin pimped him out and wanted to help him for his daughter. Opal tells his brother to stop whining because he got his kiss with Billie. Finally, Billie tells Justin that she had so much fun she cannot wait for Prank Day, the sequel, next summer, confirming she wants to come back.

Unfortunately for Justin, Maisy was listening to their conversation. She calls the owner of the home Justin is renting and convinces her to sell. This way, Justin has no place to rent next year. (The whole reason Justin rented was that it was in his price range, to begin with, with its haunted reputation). Maisy, a bit cruelly, lets Justin know, who mutters how his step-sister always wins.
