Over the years, we have seen shows like Cribs, Extreme Home Makeover, and The Home Edit, but Netflix has upped the ante with the release of How To Build a Sex Room. I was intrigued to check this one out, so let’s dive in.
We meet Melanie Rose, who has been designing high-end homes for over fifteen years. She had a client ask her if she could build a sex room, and intrigued by the idea, she did and learned that sex rooms are the most fun rooms to design. We get a montage of rooms straight out of Fifty Shades of Grey. Melanie breaks down the idea of the sex room and tells us how they aren’t as “gross” or “weird” as people like to hone in on the word “sex” when talking about the rooms.
I loved listening to the first couple talk about how they had this room in their house that no one knew about. Well, folks, the entire world knows now.
One of the more fascinating things about this show was understanding the wide range of the definition of sex to each couple. Early on, Melanie broke down that people hear that word and are automatically turned off, but honestly, the show’s title isn’t exactly as scary as most will make it. The show has some depth, and it’s really no different from any other makeover show most people watch. You are just adding an element of sex to the mix.
When watching these home makeover series or any reality show, the host is as vital as the subject. The show simply would not work with any other host. Melanie Rose has this spunky personality that spices things up as she wasn’t afraid to get down and dirty with each couple. Her vibrant, upbeat nature turns the show’s possible awkwardness into something fun and unique. I will also say she is pretty hilarious, and I think this woman needs to come out with a podcast cause I am sure she’s got stories for days. Without her, this ride would not have been as good.
Another thing that stands out with How To Build a Sex Room is that each episode presents a different challenge for Melanie, which keeps the level of intrigue for us viewers super-high. A series like this can get a little redundant because each house might not look the same, but they all have the same build. However, the rooms were built based on sex and how each couple viewed it differently, which meant Melanie and her team had to be creative.
Overall, How To Build a Sex Room won’t be for everyone, which is fine. If you like the other home makeover shows, I believe you will enjoy this show with an open mind. Melanie Rose is fantastic as our host, and each episode presents something fun and even quite informative.
