Italian dramedy Under the Amalfi Sun catches up with the young lovers of Under the Riccione Sun to explore their relationship a year later. The premise from our review:
Camilla (Ludovica Martino) returns to Italy from her school year in Canada. Her boyfriend Vincenzo (Lorenzo Zurzolo) is thrilled to be reunited with her and anxious to ask her to move in with him. But being together all summer, and dealing with his blindness in person, is very different from a long-distance relationship and it’s unclear if they’re up for the challenge.
The film also follows Vinz’s friend Furio as he tries to change himself to be more appealing to girls with the help of local bad boy Hans. Cami’s friend Nathalie, who has come with her from Canada, also struggles with relationships following a bad experience and new insecurities. Meanwhile, Vincenzo’s mother, Irene, is struggling to give her son more freedom and fully embrace her relationship with her boyfriend, Lucio.
After much deliberation, Camilla and Vincenzo decide to stay together despite her getting a job offer for a teaching assistant position in Canada. Vincenzo gets a one-way ticket to Canada and plans to go with her, having affirmed their love and their dedication to each other.
The film ends with Camilla teaching him to ride a bike, an activity previously deemed too difficult for him.
Her ex-husband Roberto’s sudden arrival threw Irene off and caused Lucio to question if she’s fully invested in their relationship. When he leaves, she chases after him with Roberto’s help and tells him that she is committed to their relationship. She also gets to have a cathartic moment of telling off her ex.
Furio realizes that his obsession with Rebecca was ill-founded, and she’s not as wonderful as he thought she would be. Now determined just to be himself and to attempt to look beyond girls’ appearances, he meets a cute waitress and begins a romance with her. Nathalie decides to give Hans another chance after realizing that he has also been hurt in the past and that his behavior stems from the past betrayal. Everything is wrapped up neatly, and everyone is paired into happy couples.
