Mike is a biographical miniseries about the life of the infamous boxer Mike Tyson. The Hulu original was created by Steven Rogers (I, Tonya), with episodes directed by Rogers’ frequent collaborator Craig Gillespie, who has worked on I, Tonya and Pam & Tommy, to name but a few of his projects. The series stars Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) as the boxing champion and explores all the major events throughout his childhood, teenage years and adulthood. The series connects all these life events via an overarching narration from Tyson at his one-man show. Tyson talks candidly about his many highs and lows in authentic, honest detail.

The series is in-your-face, highly-stylized and fast-paced, with stunning performances from Rhodes as Tyson and Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs) as Cus D’Amato, Tyson’s coach. Rhodes immerses himself in the role entirely, perfectly capturing the look and sound of Tyson, whilst bringing a vulnerability and likeability to the criminal too. Keitel is equally as impressive as the quirky trainer and their bond makes for some heart-wrenching scenes. Mike has been criticized for its uneven pacing and for completely disregarding Tyson’s input, but I think the filmmakers have been brave to address Tyson’s seedier side without bias.

Will there be a season 2 of the Hulu series Mike – renewed or cancelled status

Status: TBC

Mike has become quite the controversial project for Hulu, due to Tyson’s own comments on the series and this no-holds-barred, brutal depictions of the fighter from Steven Rogers and his team. I doubt Hulu would want to renew this show even if they could, but it looks like the miniseries will probably conclude as a one off production anyway. The narrative looks to be all encompassing and seems likely to capture most of Tyson’s main life events within its eight-episode run, which would make a second season pretty redundant.

All in all, I would be very surprised if Hulu was to renew the series for a second season and I predict that the miniseries will not be renewed for any follow-up instalments. The series has done a great job of exploring Tyson’s career and personal life in depth, showing both the good and the bad in the athlete’s complex persona. It’s a refreshing take on the man, which I think deserves higher praise for its ballsy approach. As always, we’ll keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of the Hulu miniseries Mike.
