Summary

There’s no doubt that this series can continue and thrive. It’s entertaining, action-packed, and worth the thumbnail in your Netflix dashboard.

There are many reasons why Netflix will always have market pull, and that’s because it gives series like The Brave Ones a chance. A supernatural story steeped in South African mythology.

From the offset, this series has energy and vibe, bringing the audience into a new world. With a fast pace, The Brave Ones does not hesitate to introduce the intricacies of the story. The premise follows an all-mighty goddess reincarnated as a young woman who must harness her divine powers to avenge her sister’s death and protect her family from destruction. With that comes polarity, as conflicts emerge.

The Netflix series does not hold back on bringing the mythology to the viewers, and maybe that’s where the first problem lies. By giving plenty of moving parts, it does not give the audience time to settle in with the characters. Ntsiki (played by Sthandile Nkosi), for instance, is a character that has plenty of aurae, making the audience wonder about her depth in personality. However, The Brave Ones prefers to employ constant threats over fleshing out their characters. But they could at least allow the face of the series to have a more emotional connection with her audience.

And perhaps that’s the point; in six episodes, The Brave Ones enjoys itself as a well-promoted South African Netflix series and gives as much vibe and energy as it can to the story. There’s a sense of needed justice entwined in the story while the mythology unfolds every minute. The powers on show are birthed from an underlying tragedy that wields the plot points forward, giving a sense of purpose to the characters.

Six chapters bring sadness. It feels like season 1 could have worked with more scope. Introducing mythology in a series model needs time and care. However, there’s no doubt that this series can continue and thrive. It’s entertaining, action-packed, and worth the thumbnail in your Netflix dashboard.
