For those unfamiliar with the premise, Good Detective is set in Incheon, South Korea — the drama tells stories of people who try to hide ugly truths and those who uncover the facts.
For instance, Kang Do-Chang has worked as a detective for 18 years! He uses his experience and acquaintances to get to the bottom of a severe case.
And then you have Oh Ji-Hyeok, a top-level investigator. Nine years of experience under their belt. He uses evidence and taps into the criminal’s psyche. The trauma he holds from childhood means he does not share his emotions or feelings.
Season 2 sees the good detectives continue in the Violent Crimes Team and use the truth to bring down the villains.
The second season of Good Detective occupied the Saturday & Sunday JTBC timeslot that was previously occupied by Cleaning Up.
Good Detective has not been renewed for a third season by JTBC. However, it’s not unusual for the industry to wait until they decide on renewal. Most K-Dramas tend to enjoy a single-season story and wrap things up conclusively by the finale. So once we have seen the conclusion, we’ll be able to sense what the writers have in mind. However, that doesn’t mean it will not be renewed. While the K-Drama industry tends to enjoy single-season stories, the trend of second and third seasons has increased in the last 12 months.
Good Detective has done well in the K-Drama market. Just recently, on September 11, 2022, the Korean drama scored an average nationwide rating of 5.984 percent that day for episode 14, according to Nielsen Korea.
This is respectable and will encourage the network to at least think about continuity. Only time will tell, of course. Usually, K-Dramas with higher ratings than this tend to get renewed, and it’s certainly dropped for Good Detective since season 1 — their finale back on August 25, 2020, finished with a nationwide rating of 7.469%.
