Summary
It’s almost scary to see how simple it was for these teenagers to break into these high-profile celebrity homes without getting caught early on. It was always a back-and-forth between Alexis and Nick. So seeing what went on behind the scenes changed everything for the story that we watched unfold at the time.
This review of the Netflix series The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist does not contain spoilers or any major reveals.
In the mid-2000s, Hollywood shifted from movie stars to celebrities, and there is a difference between the two. At one point, movie stars were private people, and no one knew anything about them. Once the tabloids became all about gossip and Perez Hilton started his website, the richness of Beverly Hills was exposed for everyone to see.
This documentary series is based on the “Bling Ring” robberies that took place in LA’s rich suburbs between 2008-2009. What was so fascinating about this documentary series is finally hearing what Alexis Neiers went through because her story was amplified more than the others. At the time, the producers of her reality show thought it was a good idea to incorporate the scandal for ratings, but that ultimately destroyed her. It was interesting to see how it all started with Nick Prugo and his reasoning behind creeping into the Hollywood Hills.

Witnessing the shift in real-time from tabloids to social media at a young age was hard to process, especially because these celebrities were going through a cosmic shift in their lives. In a way, reality television ruined a lot of the stardom that came with being a movie star because of the allure of reality TV stars.
Now, even more so than before, anyone can become famous after one hit video, and that says a lot about viewer consumption. Society has changed drastically because of social media, and it’s almost like everyone’s personal life is open for everyone to see no matter what.
