It’s fair to say that Once Upon a Small Town has offered something different to the majority of K-dramas released in 2022, which is why the desire for a season 2 is there. Full of unambiguous heart, it’s a wholly comfortable ride, breezily moving along without testing its audience. Put simply, the series is a real breath of fresh air, excelling in simple storytelling aided by its youthful cast.
For the most part, the show revolves around Ji-yul, a Seoul-based veterinarian who, when called upon by his grandfather, is required to relocate to the remote village of Huidong. There, he has to take care of the area’s only veterinary hospital, which brings plenty of unique experiences. While in Huidong, the vet meets Ja-young, a warm-hearted police officer who shares a slowly unraveled past with Ji-yul and is amongst the village’s most popular residents. Add to this the multifaceted peach farmer Sang-Hyeon, and you have yourself a largely wholesome series that interweaves its characters into an engaging love triangle without compromising each character’s respective life.
Once Upon a Small Town Season 2 is Unlikely to Happen
Unsurprisingly, Once Upon a Small Town has not been renewed for a second installment. Most K-Dramas only have one season, and while some, like Alchemy of Souls, found themselves picked up for more episodes, it’s hard to see this being the case here. While the story has been fun to follow, there is only so much you can get out of a love triangle in addition to the show’s remote setting.
With that being said, you can never really say never anymore. Although it’s likely Once Upon a Small Town is over, the series still enjoys a decent following online, and it wouldn’t be impossible to set up a fresh story once the current one has been tied up. Still, if I were to bet, I would say that, as is the norm, this will be a one-season affair.
