This article discusses 7 films like Meet Cute you must watch.

There are a surprising amount of romantic comedies that involve time travel, but Meet Cute still feels like something new for the genre. The new film, streaming on Peacock, features Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson as a couple going on their first date again and again as Sheila keeps going back in time to prevent the next day from coming. Here are seven other films, some involving time travel and some not, that are similar to Meet Cute.

Like For Like – 7 films like Meet Cute you must watch

About Time (2013)

If we’re discussing romantic films that involve time travel, About Time is the best. Written and directed by Richard Curtis, the film depicts a man (a charming boy next door Domhnall Gleeson) who discovers from his father (the always wonderful Bill Nighy) that the men in his family can go back in time short distances. Tim decides that he will use this power to improve his love life and ensure that he gets things right, especially once he meets Mary (Rachel McAdams). The cast also includes Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Vanessa Kirby, and Richard E. Grant in small roles.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day is in many ways the quintessential film about a character living one day over and over. Directed by Harold Ramis and starring Billy Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliot, the film has maintained popularity since the early 1990s, even inspiring a Broadway musical adaptation. Phil Connors (Murray) is a weatherman covering the events of Groundhog Day who gets stuck in a time loop in which he relives February 2, much like Sheila is reliving the same day in Meet Cute.

Palm Springs (2020)

Released during quarantine at a time when many people felt like they were living the same day on repeat, Palm Springs definitely struck a chord. The directorial debut of Max Barbakow, the film follows two strangers (Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti) who are both stuck in a time loop at a friend’s wedding in Palm Springs. Things get more interesting when they realize that they’re stuck in the time loop together, especially as they plot a way to get out of it.

Back to the Future (1985)

I couldn’t discuss time travel movies without talking about Back to the Future even though Marty McFly is traveling back a lot further than Sheila is in Meet Cute. The sci-fi movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and has become a classic. Starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Crispin Glover, it follows a teenager who accidentally goes back to 1955 in a time machine built by his eccentric friend “Doc.” He accidentally prevents his parents from falling in love and must rectify his mistake and find his way back to present day before he causes permanent damage.

50 First Dates (2004)

In 50 First Dates, there’s no actual time loop happening, but there’s still a similar effect for the main couple. The rom-com was directed by Peter Segal and stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Lucy has a specific form of amnesia that causes her to forget the events of the day before. Henry realizes that he must win her over each day and try to find a way to ensure that she doesn’t forget him.

I Want You Back (2022)

While I Want You Back doesn’t feature any time travel, it does feature Pete Davidson in a small supporting role. It’s also a similarly unconventional 2022 rom-com in which two people who have both recently been dumped decide to team up to sabotage their exes’ new relationships. The film stars Charlie Day, Jenny Slate, Gina Rodriguez, and Scott Eastwood. It’s a clever exploration of the lengths to which people will go to win back someone who was never right for them.

Frances Ha (2012)

Frances Ha might seem like a strange pick for this list because it doesn’t feature any time travel or even a central romantic relationship. But if what you appreciated about Meet Cute was how Sheila is sort of floundering in her life and trying to figure things out, then Frances Ha is the ultimate film for you. The black and white film was directed by Noah Baumbach and written by Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, who also stars as the lead. The film also includes Adam Driver in a supporting role. At the heart of it, it’s about a 27-year-old who is a struggling dancer, trying to figure out what she’s doing in her life and navigate changes in her closest friendship.
