This article poses the question, “Is High Water based on a true story,” and may contain strong spoilers on the Netflix limited series.

1997 was a tragic year for Poland and was also a significant warning of the dangers of climate change and adverse weather impacts. Poland experienced a deadly flood, bringing one of the biggest natural catastrophes. On record, 40% of Wroclaw got underwater. In some areas, 500 liters of water per square meter. Dubbed the “flood of the millennium,” it’s difficult to believe a natural disaster like this only happened 25 years ago.

The cause of the flood was unfortunate — two large air masses led to the mass volume of rain. The flood claimed the lives of 114 people. Economically, Poland was hit hard, and the recovery was even more difficult.

Is Netflix’s High Water based on a true story?

2022 marks the 25 anniversary of the flood in Poland, and to highlight the disaster, Netflix is releasing High Water, which dramatizes the events. So while it will point to actual events, a lot of the stories entwining the series will be inspired rather than exact. The premise will focus on the flood, the affected Wroclaw region, and the local communities. Here is the official synopsis:

“When the flood wave approaches the capital of Lower Silesia, a decision is made to save the city from the destructive elements, the surrounding villages and fields should be sacrificed.”

To confirm — Netflix’s High Water is based on a true story, making it highly unlikely that there will be a sequel.
