We discuss the ending of the Paramount Plus film Significant Other which will contain spoilers.

Significant Other is a Paramount Plus original horror movie set in the stunning Pacific Northwest. Maika Monroe and Jake Lacy star as Ruth and Harry, a couple who adventure deep in the woods for a relaxing hiking holiday. Ruth wasn’t too thrilled about the trip, to begin with, but things turn sour pretty fast when Harry decides to propose at the edge of a cliff, triggering a panic attack in her.

However, things don’t stay awkward for long as after visiting a mysterious cave, a seemingly distracted Ruth asks her boyfriend to take her back to the edge of the cliff and attempt his proposal once more. He happily complies only for her to push him off the edge to his apparent death. From this point on, things get even weirder.

Significant Other ending explained

After seemingly murdering her now-fiancé, Ruth is found by a pair of good-samaritan hikers who offer to shelter her for the night. However, it’s not long until Harry returns unharmed, and uses his really long razor-sharp nails to murder the other couple, yet seems unable to hurt Ruth. As it turns out, Harry is no longer Harry. He’s actually a “scout” from an alien planet, who became a copy of Harry and inherited the deceased’s feelings, including his love for Ruth. Feeling giddy with love, a feeling apparently only we humans are capable of, Alien-Harry shows Ruth his small spaceship (which is apparently like the Tardis, bigger on the inside) and offers to take her on a journey to space. The young woman is not too thrilled about the prospect of leaving her planet, so she stabs the creature and tries to (literally!) feed him to sharks. Of course, Alien-Harry is indestructible. He captures Ruth, expresses his disappointment in her, and proceeds to copy her while giving a speech about the significance of love.

As Ruth is about to find herself on the wrong end of the alien’s sharp nail she realizes she has one more hand to play: Her anxiety. As the creature copied her, it also copied her mental health issues, so the young woman used some choice words to cause the unsuspecting alien a panic attack. Initially, the plan seems to have worked. Ruth seemingly kills her copy, before running to the car and driving off. However, the creature was indeed indestructible and the final scene has Ruth listening to an ominous message on the car’s radio. The alien promises to find her and do unpleasant things to her. As the camera pans away, several more spaceships enter the Earth’s atmosphere suggesting an invasion is well underway.
