This is a story recap of the Prime Video series The Devil’s Hour season 1, which contains spoilers as it details what happened.

The Devil’s Hour is a complex thriller created by Tom Moran, starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine. It starts off as a murder investigation but very quickly turns into something much more elaborate and mysterious, with seriously sinister horror tones added in for good measure. The police suspect the reclusive Gideon of these crimes, and he is subsequently arrested, but Gideon’s defense is a real head trip, one that intricately involves Lucy Chambers and, in turn, opens up her eyes to a world of possibilities. With such a complicated plot on display, it may help to see a breakdown of each installment. Here’s what happened in each episode of The Devil’s Hour season 1:

Story recap – what happened in The Devil’s Hour season 1?

Episode 1 – “3.33”

Lucy Chambers wakes every night at 3.33 am from a terrifying dream. In this dream, a woman contemplates killing themselves. The woman in the dream seems to be Lucy’s mother Sylvia. Lucy’s eight-year-old son Isaac talks of imaginary friends and seeing people in the house. She takes him to multiple psychiatrists, but no one can figure the boy out. Detective Inspector Ravi Dhillon and Detective Sergeant Nick Holness investigate the murder case of Harold Slade, which leads them to a creepy hotel room that a suspected murderer called Gideon rents. Inside the room are photographs and notes that link to Harold Slade and a murder that is about to happen that very night. Lucy is also linked to this second murder, she was the case worker of the victims and her name is written on Gideon’s walls.

Episode 2 – “The Velveteen Rabbit”

Isaac continues to see people in the house that are not really there and communicates with his imaginary friend Meredith. Lucy’s hallucinations worsen too. She visits new neighbors on the street, who have a daughter also called Meredith and Lucy sees visions of Meredith’s mother’s face been burnt. Isaac buys the exact same toy every week from the shops, but doesn’t play with it. Lucy sees the same toy at Meredith’s home. Ravi chases up on all the Lucy Chamber’s in the area, after seeing the name on Gideon’s wall. Lucy struggles with Isaac’s emotionlessness and breaks down after he is bullied again at school. She finds her estranged husband Mike at their home, he wants to know whether they will ever get back together. While they talk, Isaac goes missing. In a future timeline, Lucy talks with Gideon, who is in handcuffs at the police station. He talks of her remembering the future. She asks why he took her son.

Episode 3 – “Tchaikovsky”

The police investigate the disappearance of Isaac, believing it is linked to the other crimes. Lucy sees a drawing of Isaac’s watch in Gideon’s paperwork and confirms that the watch is missing from the house. Lucy keeps remembering odd things and seems to know Harold Slade (the first victim), even though they have never met. She visits his home and finds a hidden safe containing deeds to another house and a key. Lucy finds her mother Sylvia, who has also gone missing. Lucy, Sylvia and the police head to this strange house, where they find Isaac’s watch. Lucy has visions of a hidden door, which leads to a cellar. The cellar really exists and has a kid’s playroom and a camera setup inside it. Sylvia finds Isaac in the nearby forest. In different timelines, Gideon says he didn’t take Isaac, that nobody did. Then Meredith’s family find Isaac in their home.

Episode 4 – “After The Storm”

The police question Isaac about his disappearance, he says that he was taken to the woods by a man that looks like Ravi and then he found the abandoned house. Lucy looks into the disappearance of Aiden Stenner, which leads her to a seedy, criminal world. Ravi and Nick find Aiden’s friend Mia, who is involved with a criminal gang. They stakeout her house and witness violent acts. The police enter and arrest the gang members inside. Isaac starts to show slight signs of emotions, smiling at Ravi and hugging his mother. Lucy finds Aiden and believes she has now saved his life, by scaring off a mysterious man in a black car. Ravi follows this car and finds Gideon inside. Gideon warns Ravi to stay away, pointing a gun at him. Gideon says that because Aiden lived, everything is now messed up. Lucy is suspended for assaulting Aiden’s mother. Isaac burns his hand on a heater and laughs creepily. Aiden is ordered to kill Nick Holness by a gang boss.

Episode 5 – “The Half of Ourselves We Have Lost”

Gideon kidnaps a man called Connor, stating that he wants to stop him from doing terrible things in the future. Aiden fails to kill himself and confesses to killing Nick and his wife. Sylvia and Isaac both admit that they can see things that aren’t really there. She passes him a button to squeeze, to keep him based in reality. Lucy has further visions, including Meredith nearly being ran over by her car, Ravi dying and Lucy marrying Ravi. A futuristic dream reveals the killers full identity – Gideon Shepherd. Lucy researches this name and finds a news story about a 9-year-old boy who killed his father and then disappeared. They track down his brother Malcolm. Gideon left Malcolm messages, which leads to Gideon’s new lair. Ravi finds Connor in this building, but Gideon shoots Connor dead as he flees. Lucy crashes her car into Gideon’s as he escapes. Gideon is then arrested, although he refuses to speak to anyone other than Lucy.

Episode 6 – “Amor Fati”

In the season finale, Gideon explains his entire life story, how he relived the same life over and over again. He remembers what happens from one life to the next and uses this to predict events and to stop tragedies. Gideon became obsessed with saving lives and changing the future though. He saved Jonah Taylor and a girl called Evelyn. He also killed numerous murderers before they committed their crimes and tried to change criminal’s mind-sets too. Unfortunately, for all his good, he always ended up back in prison, arrested by Ravi every time.

This latest life is different though, Gideon stopped Lucy’s mother from killing herself and completely altered Lucy’s own life in the process. Marrying Mike and giving birth to Isaac are all entirely new events, they weren’t supposed to be. Gideon says Isaac is an anomaly. He believes Isaac is devoid of love, but he leaves a message later saying he loves his mother. Mike is mean to Isaac and pours his beer on him. Isaac takes his top off and places it on the heater to dry, which starts a fire. Mike sees the fire spreading and lets Isaac die. Lucy returns home to find her house on fire and runs in to save Isaac. Gideon escapes from prison. Lucy collapses in the fire and has visions of another life. In these, she is in love with Ravi and becomes a detective. She arrests Gideon in this other timeline and Meredith’s family are the ones in the house fire, but survive unharmed.
