The English season 1, episode 5 recap – will Cornelia be able to save Whipp?

So, the question is, will Cornelia be able to save Whipp? Cornelia visits Black-eyed Mog, and she tells her some backstory. She was called by Cheyenne when she was twenty-one in 1868. Even Mog is confused about why Cornelia is here. As she explains it, she knows Kills on Water is her sworn enemy. John Clarke told her he had Eli Whipp and was holding him hostage. She understands that Whipp will come for her and kill her under Kills on Water’s orders. Then why go to her? Well, that’s because Cornelia has a sawed-off shotgun underneath the kitchen table, across from Mog. She fires it, burning her right inner thigh, and kills her instantly.

After killing Mog’s most prominent son, she corners the other next to a barn. He is stabbed to death by a boy in the barn through the door. Cornelia delivers Mog’s sunglasses to Kills on Water, which grants Whipp’s release. This seems like an unusually quick wrap-up to this storyline of Kills on Water making that appearance in episode four. Is this just a way to bridge the connection between backstories? Maybe even as a tool to get these two back together? No matter, though, Whipp decides to accompany Cornelia to Wyoming.

Under a bed of stars, Whipp bravely tells Cornelia’s feelings for her. He says home is now with her. They kiss, but Cornelia begins to cry and runs away. She begins to cover herself with dirt as if washing away the guilt she feels for living life again after her son’s death. They wake up the following day and find men at the Western Cable Magnet Company kidnapping the boy who saved Cornelia’s life. In a slight twist of fate, when they approach the men, Whipp recognizes the Pawnee woman who is now their maid. She is Touching Ground, the wife of Running Hawke, who was killed in the first episode. They also had a son, if you recall, the stable boy.

The English season 1, episode 5 ending

Touching Grounds asks for Cornelia and Whipp to take her son. They ride their horses into the sunset, but one of the men fires a giant bullet from his buffalo rifle. The shot kills the horse, knocks out the young man, and traps him under the horse. While the men continue taking pictures, Touching Ground comes up behind them. She shoots one shot each into each man on top of the platform. Two men then ride out, ready to attack, but Whipp charges and kills them where they sit on their saddles.

Finally, Cornelia passes out from the untreated infection in her right leg.
