Summary

Zac Efron’s cause to find sustainable resources around the world takes him down, as he explores life in Australia. Full of energy and information, this series is an educational and emotional watch.

We review the Netflix documentary series Down to Earth with Zac Efron season 2, which was released on November 11th, 2022.

High School Musical fans rejoice as our talented The Greatest Showman star Zac Efron goes down under for the second season of his documentary travel series, Down to Earth. In this series, we see our beloved Hollywood babe leave all the showbiz behind and explore some of the most beautiful sites in Australia. Through the eight 40-minute episodes, we follow Efron and wellness expert Darin Olien as they travel Australia and learn about sustainable living practices while exploring the country’s local food, immersing themselves in their culture, and learning their customs.

Together they take on the wide-open outback, swim in the coral reefs, and continue their quest for sustainable living. In the series’ first season, Efron and Olien visited France, Puerto Rico, Iceland, England, Costa Rica, Peru, and Italy, to learn and push for a more sustainable future. Similarly, in this series, the crew travels to untouched, raw nature and goes to places that don’t usually take tourists. This is so they can raise awareness of their issues and show how they’re being affected by global warming – and how we can help.

This series is very well shot, with beautiful, jaw-dropping cinematography, carefully edited scenes, and shots that showcase everything Australia has to offer. Each episode is filled with information and energy that you can’t orchestrate. Zac’s passion is heart-warming and catching – he’s genuinely interested in learning, and he and Darin have a nice chemistry. It’s sweet when you see all the crew eating together and having natural banter. Efron narrates the series with a calm yet characteristic voice, making him a great storyteller. There are short animations used to help demonstrate figures and facts to the audience.

From islands to organic farms to 100% sustainable apartments and the burned Australian landscapes from the recent big wildfires, they travel all over and experience everything. They visit sanctuaries and see the devastation of the fires on the wildlife and their rehabilitation programs. We get to see Koalas and Kangaroos and watch Zac try to feed them. This series is really challenging us to think and realize and admit that all our choices and actions have consequences. That we’re affecting people, locations and lives we don’t know about. It’s showing us that we need to be smarter with what we have to have the best impact in the future.

There are so many ways in which we can be more sustainable, from reducing our waste and reducing our plastic use to growing our own vegetables and using renewable energy, and each country has its own practices. Learning how and what Australians put into practice is interesting. It has made me more aware and made me think about what else I can do to help, and change begins at home.

Overall this series is a wonderful watch. From baking to fishing, their island-hopping adventure has taught me a lot about Australia. They’re telling stories that need to be shared. I highly recommend their next journey in the UK for their third season. Can we tempt Zac and Darin with chip butties and Guy Fawkes? I’m sure he’ll take the time to travel and show us what more the world has to offer.
