The filmmaking duo and real-life partners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar are back after their hugely successful series Dark concluded back in 2020. Their hotly anticipated follow-up series, titled 1899, is an epic period drama set aboard the passenger ship the Kerberos. Just like their first Netflix original, this latest offering involves mystery, elements of horror, and a healthy dose of science fiction spectacle to draw in unsuspecting viewers once again.
The series focuses on the disappearance of a similarly designed ship, called the Prometheus, which has strong links to the crew and passengers aboard the Kerberos. Captain Eyk Larsen (Andreas Pietschmann) and his ship mates discover this missing ghost ship whilst journeying to New York across the formidable Atlantic Ocean. Untold horrors and unparalleled mysteries await the unfortunate individuals aboard the Kerberos, when these two ships are grounded beside one another.
Season one of 1899 is an addictive and puzzling thrill ride, teasing small snippets of information about its cast of characters and further mysteries with each episode. All the installments seem to end with unfathomable cliffhangers that will surely divide viewers. The show is beautifully crafted in every department, from the cinematic visuals to the atmospheric score, with a gripping script and impressive ensemble. This is superb craftsmanship all around that needs to be applauded, but will Netflix be returning to these perilous seas for a second installment?

It has been confirmed by an official source that there will not be a second season of 1899 – Netflix have cancelled the series. Creator Baran Bo Odar confirmed via his Instagram page of the news:
With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible jounrey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did we Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure.
We love you. Never forget.

This may not be a huge surprise to many. Netflix cancel a lot of shows based on watch-hours data, but there was a huge expectation from the streaming service that they may give 1899 a chance, especially due to the success of Dark, which gathered a large fan base over time. Maybe this is the sign of things to come for Netflix, with a more cutthroat approach in mind.
We are disappointed. This is a big blow for those who enjoyed Dark and wanted another series that was equally thought-provoking.

At this moment in time, 1899 has not been renewed by Netflix, but we expect more news in due course. Dark, the first German-language original from Netflix ran for three seasons, totaling 26 episodes. The show managed to conclude in a satisfactory fashion, somehow ending its intricate narrative in a believable manner. Dark was an exemplary TV series, but it must have seemed like a hard sell at the time. Imagine pitching a German science fiction series with complex time travel plotting. Yet it was worth the gamble, becoming a hit for the streaming platform. Hopefully, 1899 can provide similar results.
The series involves multiple languages, multiple storylines, and many complicated characters. It is easy enough to follow but requires multiple watches to take it all in. Audiences may be put off by the show’s complex nature and dizzying twists, although that may be doing the average viewer a disservice. I believe the public wants to be entertained and equally perplexed these days. That is why Dark succeeded in the first place. Audiences want to be able to put the pieces together and try to solve these mysteries for themselves. And the trickier the puzzle, the better the experience.
I think 1899 could be a huge success for Netflix, and thus I’m predicting that it will be renewed by the streaming giants in due course. It’s not that hard to surmise really going on Dark’s history. The company is clearly onto a winner with this series and its continued partnership with Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.
