Where was the Prime Video film The People We Hate at the Wedding filmed? We discuss locations and settings for the movie.

The People We Hate at the Wedding is the latest romantic comedy from Prime Video, based on the successful 2016 novel of the same by Grant Ginder. The film is directed by Claire Scanlon (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), with a screenplay by the Molyneux sisters (Bob’s Burgers and Deadpool 3). Released on November 18th, this silly wedding romp focuses on the reunion of American siblings Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt) with their wealthy and highly-resented half-sister Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), who is getting married across the pond, in posh old London city.

Tying this divided family together is their out-going, loud-mouthed mother Donna, played by the always amazing Allison Janney (I, Tonya). Eloise’s father and Donna’s first husband, Henrique (Isaach de Bankole) is a wealthy Frenchman, who has passed on most of his riches to daughter Eloise. Alice and Paul are jealous of Eloise’s good fortune, hence the deep-seated resentment. Donna hopes the wedding will finally bring all of her children back together, so that they can put aside their grievances and be one big, happy family again.

Alice and Paul take the plunge and travel to London for the wedding preparations, which involve the usual malarkey. There are awkward meal dates, a bachelorette party from hell and an unforgettable rehearsal dinner for the unhappy family to endure before the big day. Critics were decidedly frosty on this one, calling the movie devoid of humor and overall a wasted opportunity. It currently holds a 31% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 5.4 on IMDb.

Where was The People We Hate at the Wedding filmed – a breakdown of locations

Los Angeles

The end credits states that the production had a dedicated Los Angeles Unit, where a majority of the earlier scenes were shot. Alice’s character is based in the Californian city and her storyline involves the use of office blocks, restaurants and bars. The movie doesn’t really use any famous or cinematic locations and sticks to your generic settings. Alice’s office is contemporary and minimalistic, while the restaurant scenes with Jorma Taccone’s Jonathan utilize your standard, inoffensive backdrops.

London

Eloise is based in an affluent corner of London and the location scouts make great use of the swankier side to the city. There’s a street that looks stolen straight from the set of the Paddington movies and the film even makes a few fleeting references to that particular franchise. Alice checks in at the luxurious The Langham hotel. Whilst an unconventional bachelorette party takes place on the Thames. There are more sequences at bars, restaurants, the airport and surprisingly a British Taco Bell that all appear to be authentically based in the UK.

The British countryside

Finally, the climactic scenes of the film take place in the beautiful British countryside. The eventful rehearsal dinner is shot inside a marquee tent, which may be on location, but it is more than likely a set design, filmed in the studio. While the big day itself includes exterior shots that display a fancy wedding venue and a quaint, little chapel in the background.
