Summary

It’s a captivating and raunchy docuseries that highlights the sex lives and loyalty of those in the royal lineage.

We review the Netflix documentary series Blood, Sex & Royalty season 1, which was released on November 23rd, 2022.

For those who have been completely invested in royal lineage and the European Renaissance, Netflix has created a unique series that captures it in the best light. The three episodes that are currently streaming focus on Queen Anne Boleyn, who reigned for three years, 1533-1536.

During this period, she had developed her own identity in court and wanted nothing more than to find love. She never wanted to be a mistress and wanted too many things to help her country. These episodes have actual historians retelling Boleyn’s story to fill the gaps, while there is a mock interview with Anne (Amy James-Kelly) as she goes into detail about certain events.

James-Kelly takes on the role of Boleyn and makes it her own. She breaks the fourth wall and makes a clear connection to the audience when she speaks to them. The mixture of interviews, docudrama, and mock interviews make this a unique series that can continue with different British royal dramas.

It’s something that has never been done before and to have episodes exploring the Tudors is especially juicy considering what we’ve learned about them so far. It is a riveting docuseries that places the viewer in the mindset of the monarch while filling in all the background knowledge of who they actually were.

The politics back in the 1500s are vastly different as they saw women as objects, but it took one woman to take back the power. Boleyn is an incredible woman, and she did trap Henry Tudor in her own way.

All she wanted was a loving husband, but it turned into a thirst for power and ultimate control over him. Once a woman has power over anything, it can consume her, and she loses her way. Boleyn had a tough run as Queen because of her inability to give her husband an heir.

She had a daughter, then a miscarriage shortly after, and after experiencing that kind of loss, it’s hard to return to form. Her mind was simply not present when discussing her future with Henry because she was so consumed with giving him an heir.

The more interesting part is how she and her sister come back together again after having such an estranged relationship. What ends up happening between them is unforgivable, and Anne has a meltdown. It’s almost as if no one could be trusted in court because of the hunger for power.

No one would stand in Henry’s way, including his own wife. This is by far one of the most interesting projects to hit Netflix this year, and it’s something fun to watch if you’re a fan of those historical stories.
