We discuss 10 movies like Monica, O My Darling you must watch. Check out these excellent recommendations.

Monica, O My Darling seems like a simple story, but it gets more intricate as it goes along. As per the synopsis on IMDB, this film explores a web of romance and relationships, as one man gets entangled in a conspiracy. The one thing the director Vasan Bala does well is creates a unique atmosphere when blending genres.

There is plenty of action and great close-ups of characters that make them intimidating when they’re speaking. There are also some conventions pulled from a Western that works within the context of Bollywood films. The suspense is built extremely well and the score that accompanies the scenes elevates it to another level. We also find out that Jayant doesn’t love Nikki but is dating her so that he can marry her and take over the company, Unicorn.

Then enters Monica Machado (Huma S Quereshi) who works in Unicorn and Jayant is attracted to her. They eventually have a fling and as months go by, Monica informs Jayant that she is pregnant with his child. This film explores the mother’s connection to her child and everything she will do to protect her unborn baby.

There are films that perfectly balance the romance of relationships and the action when one becomes involved with interesting people. It becomes more engaging because both sides are devising their own plans. The twists in films like this always happen at the opportune moment and keep audiences on the edge of their seat.

10 movies like Monica, O My Darling you must watch

Dial M For Murder (1954)

This is quite similar to Monica, O My Darling because of a man’s plan to murder his wife. It’s exactly what Jayant goes through with Monica and the other characters in the film. Monica has had encounters with many others, which becomes an issue in the story.

In Dial M for Murder, a former tennis star arranges the murder of his adulterous wife, tensions rise and make this into a really interesting cat-and-mouse game, as per the synopsis on IMDB. It is an older noir film that has made an impact on the genre.

Fargo (1996)

There are some humourous moments in Monica, O My Darling that change the tone a bit with the council because some of the men who were part of the group weren’t that bright.

If we go back to the 90s, Fargo is a pretty unique little film that was created by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film follows a Minnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard’s (William H. Macy) inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen’s bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), as per the synopsis on IMDB. It is an unconventional dark comedy that surprised many when it came out. It is a very particular type of humor that is linked to the Coen brothers.

Match Point (2005)

In Match Point, a former tennis pro falls for an actress who happens to be dating his friend and soon-to-be brother-in-law, as per the synopsis on IMDB. This story is a bit intricate because of the players involved, similar to Monica, O My Darling because of what happens with Monica. There are many people involved and that’s why it makes it so engaging.

Volver (2006)

Penelope Cruz gives an incredible performance in Volver. The film is about a mother who returns to her hometown in order to fix the situations she couldn’t resolve during her life, as per the synopsis on IMDB. This ties into Monica’s story because of the lengths that she goes to with her unborn child. The exploration of motherhood helps both films and the strength both women have.

Snatch (2000)

Guy Ritchie’s vision for this film was bold and fun. In this film, there is a band of misfits; a questionable boxing promoter, a violent bookmaker, a Russian gangster, amateur robbers, and Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond, as per the synopsis on IMDB. This group of people is similar to the council and what they end up doing in Monica, O My Darling.

To Catch a Thief (1955)

Even though this is more of a heist film, it falls into perfect suspense and that is something that Monica, O My Darling has plenty of because of its neo-noir conventions. Back in the 50s and 60s no one could touch Alfred Hitchcock and he gave us many mystery films for other filmmakers to study and incorporate elements into their own films.

In To Catch a Thiefa retired jewel thief sets out to prove his innocence after being suspected of returning to his former occupation, as per the synopsis on IMDB. The powerhouse pairing of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly absolutely owned the screen and made this one of the best Hitchcock films.

Gaslight (1944)

Another filmmaker who enjoyed diving into certain mysteries is George Cukor and Gaslight is a very interesting title to highlight the meaning of the word in the film with Ingrid Bergman. As per the synopsis on IMDB, the film takes place ten years after Paula Alquist’s (Bergman) aunt was murdered in their London home, she returns from Italy in the 1880s to resume residence with her new husband. His obsessive interest in the home rises from a secret that may require driving his wife insane.

It’s all about how men can control narratives to suit their own interests and it’s surprising that this was made in the 40s and it still holds weight. Considering what happens to Monica in this film, this should definitely be on your watchlist.

Rebecca (1940)

In a darker turn for Hitchcock, a woman battles with her own mind. She is a very self-conscious woman who juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat’s wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife’s presence within the home, as per the synopsis on IMDB.

This film is an exploration of how women can perceive other relationships and other women. The focus on Monica also shows how she perceives the world around her in the film.

Pieces of a Woman (2020)

This is an incredibly tragic piece where Vanessa Kirby shines. When a young mother’s home birth ends in an unfathomable tragedy, she remains in mourning for an entire year, and relationships with loved ones change in this deeply personal story of a woman learning to live with her loss, as per the synopsis on IMDB.

This film ties into motherhood as well and how there’s such an attachment to an unborn child. Similar to Monica, O My Darling and Monica’s journey with her own unborn child.

Dangerous Lies (2020)

In this Netflix film, Cami Mendes takes things into her own hands. When a wealthy elderly man dies and unexpectedly leaves his estate to his new caregiver. She is then drawn into a web of deception and murder. If she survives, she’ll have to question everyone’s motives – even the people she loves, as per the synopsis on IMDB.

It’s wonderful that it’s a female-led film because normally films like this don’t have that. Again, the focus is on women taking things upon themselves and doing their best to solve their own issues.
