Charlie Cox has already made a name for himself on Netflix as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, a street-level superhero in the MCU. However, he hasn’t had many meaty roles since then, and aside from a brief cameo in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, the English actor has barely been seen since. No longer, however, since he’s the leading man in the new five-part espionage thriller Treason, from the writer of Bridge of Spies, Matt Charman.
Cox plays Adam Lawrence in the show. Here’s the plot synopsis, from our review:
Lawrence is, when the series starts, the deputy chief of MI6, Britain’s foreign intelligence service. He’s the model government stooge, happily married to a veteran wife, Maddy (Oona Chaplin), and the father of both a precocious son, Callum (Samuel Leakey), who thinks his dad’s job is the best thing ever, and a teenage daughter, Ella (Beau Gadsdon), who thinks it’s a boring infringement on her social life. But when the chief of MI6, Sir Martin Angelis (Ciarán Hinds), is mysteriously poisoned in a restaurant, Adam is forced to become “C”, short for “Control”, on short notice, a position he does a good job of pretending he’s ready for despite very much not being.
Adam’s new position is threatened by the reappearance of his old lover and former Russian spy, Kara (Olga Kurylenko), and his entire career is thrown into jeopardy when it seems he may have unwittingly become an asset of a foreign power.
Treason is a brisk, pacey series that makes for an ideal binge-watch, and those who enjoyed it may be wondering about its future. Here’s everything we know.
Will there be a Treason season 2?
Renewed or canceled status: TBC
While Netflix haven’t yet made an official decision regarding the show’s future, it has been billed as a limited series. Limited series’ are designed to tell a complete story arc over a fixed number of episodes. Now, while this isn’t necessarily set in stone — consider Big Little Lies and The White Lotus, for instance — it’s generally the case. Because of this, it’s unlikely that Treason will be renewed for a second season.
However, that isn’t to say that there’s no potential future for the show. While it tells a relatively complete story there’s still potential for a sequel or perhaps a spin-off, especially with strong supporting turns from Kurylenko, Oona Chaplin, and Tracy Ifeachor. The show had an advantageous release date of December 26, 2022, when most people are off work and have plenty of time for a binge, so Netflix will presumably be interested to see how the show performs.
We’ll update this post with more news as we get it.
