Hulu has arrived with a nine-episode true crime series, How I Caught My Killer, which follows stories of how the victims ended up helping find the killer. The big question is can the series stand out from the others of its nature? I will share my thoughts on the series and let you know if it is worth checking out.
How I Caught My Killer Season 1 Review
How I Caught My Killer looks at nine different cases and the real-life stories behind the homicides. The creators do this through the lens of interviews, archival tape, and recreations.
One of the biggest concerns when walking into watching these is seeing how they will stand apart from the rest. I have seen hundreds of true crime series; they can become redundant and quite tiresome. However, what stood out immediately within each episode was allowing one story to be told and not trying to explore it over a hundred episodes. Far too many times, we have one story, five episodes, or one story, ten episodes, and the series is filled with so much filler that the point gets lost.
As we peel back the layers within each episode, how these cases are solved truly is mind-blowing. In most of these cases, the people that were killed left little things that might have gotten overshadowed in the past that led to the killers being found. From one victim keeping a diary to technology of pinned locations, the evolution of crime-solving has helped put so many people behind bars.
I am not typically a fan of the reenactment played out by actors within these types of shows, but for How I Caught My Killer, they did it in a way that didn’t seem cheesy. They blended together the interviews, footage, and acting in a way that kept the focus on the right thing in how they caught the killer. I give tons of credit to the entire editing team for their work on the series.
Is How I Caught My Killer on Hulu good?
As I mentioned, the true crime genre has become oversaturated. That said, How I Caught My Killer is about to be the latest series that will have everyone talking. How they explore each of these cases the way they do keeps you invested. Each story is handled with care and respect for the victims while carefully crafting the how of it all. While watching, some things will blow your mind, and others will have your jaw on the ground. It’s not the type of series you will watch just one or two, and you will want to explore every single episode from start to finish.
Overall, I can’t recommend How I Caught My Killer enough. Whether you are a fan of true crime or not, this is a series you want to watch right away because everyone will be talking about it. With the sheer amount of stories out there, I look forward to another season in the future.
