Netflix’s Korean sci-fi film Jung_E was resoundingly popular, hitting no 1 in the Netflix charts. The post-apocalyptic film follows humans who migrated to outer space because of climate change on Earth. A civil war ensues when three of the shelters join to form the Adrian Republic and attack the other shelters, the Allied Forces. When a legendary mercenary goes into a coma after a battle, her daughter works with an AI company to clone her brain and form a new AI mercenary, code-named Jung_E. Seo Bok: Project Clone (2021)

The South Korean sci-fi action film follows a former intelligence agent who works on a classified project. The project’s specimen is Seo Bok, the first human clone ever created who knows the secret to immortality. Seo Bok befriends the agent, and the two work together to escape from people who are after him. Like Jung_E, Seo Bok: Project Clone raises questions about the purpose and ethical implications of human cloning.

Time to Hunt (2020)

The dystopian action-thriller follows a group of South Korean friends who perform a heist to become free of their financial struggles. Despite the heist being successful, a mysterious killer hunts down the group. Time to Hunt and Jung_E intrigue viewers by presenting them with unorthodox worlds that are drastically different from their own.

Train to Busan (2016)

The South Korean action-horror film follows a zombie apocalypse that spreads to a train traveling from Seoul to Busan. This leads to a fight for survival from divorced father Seok-woo, who is trying to protect his young daughter.

Train to Busan and Jung_E have the same director, Yeon Sang-ho. The two films are full of action and emotional moments of prioritizing family. Saok-woo prioritizes his daughter’s survival over his own, and Jung_E’s Seo-hyun supports the cloning of her mother so her memory can live on.

The 5th Wave (2016)

Based on Rick Yancey’s young adult novel of the same name, The 5th Wave depicts the human race facing extinction as aliens attack the planet. Cassie fights through natural disasters and disease to reunite with her younger brother and survive the invaders’ fifth attack. The 5th Wave is a futuristic action film like Jung_E with outside threats that leave the fate of the protagonists unknown.

What Happened to Monday (2017)

What Happened to Monday stays in the world of futuristic action films with crises that disrupt humanity. Families are only allowed to have one child due to overpopulation. Identical septuplets named after days of the week manage to survive for about thirty years by posing as an individual. When Monday goes missing, her sisters investigate her disappearance while trying to avoid government execution.

Space Sweepers (2021)

A Korean sci-fi film that is set in outer space like Jung_E, Space Sweepers follows the Victory, a crew of space sweepers who collect space debris and sell it to powerful corporation UTS. But when they discover a 7-year-old humanlike robot inside a space shuttle who is wanted by UTS Space Guards, they hold her for ransom. A battle then ensues between UTS soldiers and the Victory.

Okja (2017)

Netflix’s South Korean drama stars a super pig named Okja, who is a companion of young girl Mija. When self-serving conglomerate Mirando Corporation captures Okja and seeks to use her for food, Mija goes on a rescue mission to save her friend and take down the corporation, who claims to be an environmentalist organization but secretly mistreats animals.

Okja and Jung_E both display the theme of selfishness from big companies. Mirando Corporation wanted to make profits at the expense of Okta, as AI company Kronoid only cloned the brain of Seo-hyun’s mother so they could win the war.

I Saw the Devil (2010)

After a bus driver brutally murders a woman on the side of the road, her fiancé ruthlessly hunts down her murderer. Instead of immediately killing the murderer, he creates a well-executed plan to torture him throughout the film, which includes shoving a GPS tracker down his throat.

Although a horror film, I Saw the Devil doubles as an intense, action-packed masterpiece with an intelligent main character who adapts similar tactical and combat skills to AI Jung_E.

The Host (2006)

Following American military personnel’s massive chemical dump into South Korea’s Han River, a deadly creature emerges from the river. After it takes a young girl, her family bands together to take down the monster and save her. The Host and Jung_E reflect tragedies that affect entire communities after something goes wrong.

Escape the Field (2022)

In Peacock’s thriller, six strangers wake up in a mysterious cornfield and enter a deadly cat-and-mouse game. They must solve puzzles and conquer traps while being pursued by an unknown creature. Like Jung_E, this is a suspenseful survival film, as viewers root for their protagonists to survive their respective battles.
