We discuss 7 TV Shows like The Last of Us you must watch. Keep this list handy and add these shows to your watch list.

Probably one of the most highly anticipated HBO series in recent years, The Last of Us recently came out to rave reviews from critics and fans of the popular 2013 video game. Set in an alternate timeline, the show starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey centers on a man and a teenager as they travel across a post-apocalyptic version of the U.S. where the fungal-infected zombies are the least of their worries.

The series presents a dark, gritty narrative that’s sure to appease both fans of the game and attract new fans of the genre. Unfortunately, for those of us who love a good binge, HBO Max is only releasing one episode per week. Fortunately, while The Last of Us is an exquisite piece of television, it’s not the only nightmare-inducing dystopian drama out there. Here are our picks for some of the best end-of-the-world thrillers you can stream while waiting to see what happens next to Joe and Ellie on their terrifying travels.

7 TV Shows like The Last of Us you must watch

The Walking Dead (2010 – 2022)

Based on an equally popular series of graphic novels, The Walking Dead (and all its spin-offs) is probably one of the most popular post-apocalyptic series to ever grace our screens. Following a zombie apocalypse, a group of survivors must make their way into a collapsed world where the infected are not the biggest threat.

12 Monkeys (2015 – 2018)

In this Syfy original series, the apocalypse happens after a mysterious group unleashes a deadly virus that wipes out civilization. Luckily, a group of scientists in the future figure out time travel and proceeds to send a man back and task him with saving the world. The show is loosely based on the 1995 Bruce Willis film of the same name.

Z Nation (2014 – 2018)

Yet another zombie apocalypse classic, Z Nation is set several years after a virus wiped out civilization and turned everyone into flesh-eating corpses. Following a similar theme to the Last of Us, the series tells the story of a survivor who also happens to be the only person immune to the deadly virus as he tries to find a way to save humanity.

The Rain (2018 – 2020)

The Rain is the first Netflix original series Denmark produced, and it’s set several years after deadly rainfall wiped out most of humanity. This underrated series centers on a group of young survivors, including a brother-sister duo as they try to get to the bottom of what caused the catastrophe in the first place.

The 100 (2014 – 2020)

This Emmy-nominated series is set almost a century after nuclear war decimated the planet, and a small pocket of humanity survived by escaping to several space stations. As the space station’s life support is running out, 100 teen delinquents are sent back to Earth to assess if the planet is inhabitable. While there are no fungi zombies in The 100, the series does show a group of people as they try to survive years after civilization as we know it ended.

Chernobyl (2019)

While not exactly apocalyptic (even if the real-life Chernobyl disaster could have been), Chernobyl was created by Craig Mazin, the co-writer for The Last of Us. The Emmy-winning series follows several people involved in the April 1986 disaster, including first responders, politicians, and plant workers.

Jericho (2006 – 2008)

Despite only being on air for two seasons, this CBS series has gained a substantial cult following over the years. Set in the aftermath of several nuclear attacks, the series focuses on the residents of the fictional town of Jericho and their attempts at putting their lives back together after the disaster.
