We discuss 10 Movies like Your Place or Mine you must watch. Add these rom-com recommendations to your watch list.
There are many different relationships out there, but for some reason, friends to lovers work the best out of all of them. In Your Place or Mine, two best friends who live miles apart still stay in touch after agreeing years ago that they wouldn’t date each other after one date.
They remain friends, but of course, it’s barely platonic. It’s almost like they had to accept if the other fell into a relationship and distract themselves from the image of them ever being together. Some think that’s more painful than falling in love and breaking up with someone.
The films on this list have the two romantic leads, Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon, as they’ve been in other fun romantic comedies. They are friends in real life, and that energy does translate to the screen. The list below has a friends-to-lovers dynamic that can make anyone fall in love with the couples on screen.
10 Movies like Your Place or Mine you must watch
Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
Reese Witherspoon stars as Melanie Smooter, a young woman determined to reinvent herself as a New York City socialite. She must return home to Alabama to obtain a divorce from her husband after seven years of separation. Even though she has her life in the Big Apple, she realizes the small things she misses with her ex-husband when she returns home.
Legally Blonde (2001)
If you miss Reese Witherspoon, you can return to her best role, Elle Woods, in Legally Blonde. After being dumped by her boyfriend, she decides to follow him to law school and prove a point that she’s more than just her looks. It is one of the most empowering films for women, and she does put her ex-boyfriend in his place.
No Strings Attached (2011)
Ashton Kutcher has also appeared in other romantic comedies, and this one revolves around two friends who casually have sex with each other with, you guessed it, “no strings attached.” However, it’s hard for these situations to stay platonic once you’ve stayed with the person for a while.
Friends With Benefits (2011)
In the same year, Kutcher’s wife, Mila Kunis, starred in a similar film with Justin Timberlake. Their chemistry was more believable than Kutcher’s and Natalie Portman’s in No Strings Attached, making it the more memorable movie.
Just Friends (2005)
This film starring Ryan Reynolds is probably the most underrated film about people becoming more than just friends. While visiting his hometown, Chris Brander (Reynolds) meets his high school crush, Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart), with whom he was best friends. He became a massive womanizer because she friend-zoned him and became a different person entirely after he left the city.
My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
What does it mean to love your best friend truly? Julia Roberts takes everyone on a journey as Julianne Potter, whose best guy friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney), is getting married, just not to her. Their whole relationship was a will-they-won’t-they until he did find the girl of his dreams, and Julianne was crushed. We see their relationship and how their dynamic changes throughout this film.
The Proposal (2009)
If you’re a fan of gimmicks in romantic comedies, then The Proposal probably has one of the funniest ones. In this film, a pushy boss named Margaret (Sandra Bullock) forces her young assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), to marry her to keep her visa status in the States and avoid deportation to Canada. There’s a rush to meet the family and to have the wedding as soon as possible. So Andrew’s hatred for his boss turns into something else.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Even though Jerry Maguire doesn’t conventionally fall in the romance category because it’s considered a sports drama, it still has a strong work friendship turn into something more. Early in Dorothy Boyd’s (Renée Zellweger), she leaves a big firm to work with big-time sports agent Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) after he has a moral epiphany and is fired for expressing it. He decides to become an independent agent and work for the little guys.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
We meet Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey), an advertising executive and ladies’ man who bets he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days to win an extensive campaign. Then enters Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson), who is a magazine love columnist and does research for a piece about how to lose a guy in 10 days. Luckily, these two meet, and it makes for an interesting dynamic.
Set It Up (2018)
What starts as a matchmaking project for two executive assistants and their bosses turns into romance as they get to know each other through their shenanigans. The chemistry between Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell is some of the best onscreen chemistry in a very long time.
