Freeridge is a nice mixture between coming-of-age and fantasy. In this series, a group of friends may or may not have unleashed a deadly curse, starting a new adventure. The remarkable aspect of fantasy shows is that so much can be explored with the students and how they grow into different people when pushed to their limits. I’ve put together 10 TV shows like Freeridge that you should add to your watch list.

Dear White People (2017)

This Netflix original series follows a group of Black students at Winchester University, a predominately white Ivy League school. There is a radio show where Black students express themselves and discuss critical social issues and the landscape of cultural bias on the campus.

Everything Sucks! (2018)

Times may change, but high school students will always remain the same. In the 90s, the social climate was so different. In this original Netflix series, members of the A/V Club clash with the drama club to make for some entertaining television episodes.

I Am Not Okay With This (2020)

This Netflix series has a young girl navigating adolescence and high school. She has to deal with family issues, sexuality, relationships, etc. On top of that, she finds she has mysterious superpowers that add to the stress of her changing body.

Julie and the Phantoms (2020)

Julie is a teenage girl passionate about music and finds her inspiration through her life experiences. For her to live out her dream, a band of adolescent boys, “The Phantoms,” are resurrected and help her. Before “The Phantoms” died, they wanted to fulfill their rocker lifestyle but couldn’t. Now, 25 years later, with Julie as their lead singer, they plan to rock on forever.

Derry Girls (2018)

If you enjoy a good laugh with some Irish humor, then Derry Girls is right up your alley. This series explores the life of a 16-year-old girl and her friends and family during the troubles in the early 90s. The humor is dry and incredibly harsh, but that’s what places the series on its level.

Never Have I Ever (2020)

Mindy Kaling created this high school comedy series based on her experiences as a young adult. This shows a first-generation Indian-American teenage girl’s complicated life and many different social issues with an awkward undertone.

On My Block (2018)

This coming-of-age story takes place in a South Central Los Angeles high school. These four high school students experience many issues and try to pull one friend out of a gang, where all their relationships are tested.

Awkward (2011)

High school is always messy, and in this series, an unpopular 15-year-old girl has to live with a narrative being pushed upon her. The entire student body gets wind of an accident she had and mistakes it for a suicide attempt, so now everyone knows who she is and treats her differently.

Jane the Virgin (2014)

This CW series was a bit far-fetched, but the strength lay in the idea of love and relationships. When a young, devout Catholic woman discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated, she has to deal with a pregnancy, her boyfriend, and the sperm donor.

One Day at a Time (2017)

This remake was indeed such a special series that deserved more love. It follows three generations of the same Cuban-American family living in the same house: a newly divorced former military mother, her teenage daughter and tween son, and her old-school mother. This cast had terrific chemistry and addressed critical issues that many families face in America.
