To say The Strays ended ambiguously would be an understatement and when it comes to horror, sequels to films originally presented as self-contained stories are never out of the question.
Nathaniel Martello-White’s directorial debut about a woman forced to face her past premiered on Netflix on the 22nd of February, 2023. The film stars Ashley Madekwe as Neve, a light-skinned black woman who abandons her children and starts anew in a predominantly white upper-class neighborhood. Many years later, the two kids she left behind reappear to threaten the perfect life she created for herself. Response to this British thriller has been mixed, at best. While on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 71% approval rating from critics, viewers on IMDB were harsher and only awarded it a score of 4.6/10.
Will there be a sequel to The Strays?
At the time of writing, there are no official talks about a potential sequel for The Strays. However, work on the film started in November 2021 and premiered on Netflix in February 2023. Should Martello-White decide to make a part two, an early 2025 release date is probably realistic based on the movie’s timeline. Whether The Strays 2 happens, is another question.
The Strays sequel cast – who might be in it?
It would be great to see Jorden Myrie, Bukky Bakray, Maria Almeida, and Samuel Small reprise their roles as the four abandoned siblings and, of course, Ashley Madekwe as their uncaring mother, Neve. Myrie did note his interest in a potential story continuation in a recent interview with Digital Spy:
“We would talk about it on set. We will talk about what we think would happen, what the potential journey after this would be.”
Justin Salinger’s character, Ian, met an untimely end doing bench presses (in a scene meant to make any reasonable person swear off exercising for life), so it’s probably safe to say he won’t be in the sequel.
The Strays sequel plot: what could The Strays 2 be about?
The Strays ends with Neve doing what she does best and walking out on the two black children she abandoned and her two new children with Ian, baffling all four of them. Mary and Sebastian were left at the mercy of their two less stable and angrier siblings.
Part two could be set a couple of years after the events in the first movie and show the four siblings trying to find Neve. Finally, understanding Marvin and Abigail’s pain, Mary and Sebastian vow to make their unworthy mother pay for her sins. For her part, Neve left the country, married a rich man, and started enjoying a life of privilege on a Caribbean island. Of course, her perfect facade becomes threatened once more when all four of her children manage to track her down and demand some answers.
