At the center of the Netflix miniseries, The Nurse, is Christina Aistrup Hansen, a former Danish nurse who is currently spending time in prison for murdering four of her patients. Christina was born in 1984 and worked at the Nykobing Falster Hospital in the southern Danish city of Nykobing Falster. Oddly, very little else is known about Christina, but it does appear that she was popular and well-respected in her workplace.

The four-part Danish miniseries is adapted from the book of the same title by Kristian Corfixen and tells the disturbing story of newly graduated nurse Pernille Kurzmann Larsen, who begins to suspect that a celebrated senior colleague, Christina Aistrup Hansen, is killing her patients. In 2022, a similar case would be brought to fictional form, and this would also appear on Netflix as a feature-length film titled The Good Nurse.

Where is Christina Aistrup Hansen Now?

Christina is in a Danish prison serving her sentence for the murder of four patients. At her trial, Hansen proved she suffered from a histrionic personality disorder. This condition is an attention-seeking disorder that leads to violent self-absorption, narcissism, and actions arranged to make them the center of attention. This was used by her legal team to reduce the life sentence initially given to her. Charges (murder that was reduced to manslaughter) were first handed to her in 2016, and she will be released in 2028.

What did Christina Aistrup do?

Christina was responsible for the murders of four patients and sentenced to prison for life. The nurse gave sick and weak patients at the hospital where she worked lethal doses of morphine and diazepam that would lead to their death. She also gave her 7-year-old daughter strong prescription sleeping medication. Eventually, the truth of what the nurse was doing would be revealed, and Christina was sentenced to life imprisonment.

It would be one of her colleagues, Pernille Kurzmann Larsen, who started having some suspicions about the events at the hospital. She would share her fears with her boyfriend, Dr. Niels Lunden, and they would eventually contact the police. Christina Aistrup Hansen was arrested shortly after.

She was found guilty of the murders of Arne Herskov, Viggo Holm Petersen, and Anna Lise Poulsen and the attempted murder of another patient named Maggi. However, the Danish High Court reduced her sentence to twelve years as the court wasn’t convinced that the drugs injected by Christina were the sole cause of death for the patient
