A good episode offers up more context and builds towards future installments.

We recap the Netflix K-Drama series The Good Bad Mother Season 1 Episode 5, which contains spoilers.

An episode centered mostly around context and character building, this wasn’t the finest offering of The Good Bad Mother, nor the most impactful, but it still had plenty of positives. In the future, it’ll be interesting to see how Trot Baek (Baek Hyun-jin) factors into proceedings.

The Good Bad Mother Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

What happens upon Mi-joo’s return

Upon returning to Jou-ri village, Mi-joo is faced with Kang-ho, though he’s far from the man she was once so tied to, then abruptly so distant from. Thus, with memories replaying of their blunt breakup in her head, the beautician finds it difficult even lightly to interact with her injured ex.

Back at home, with Young-soon tending to his scrapes, Kang-ho admits to feeling pain in his heart from seeing “someone I don’t know.” Concurrently, Mi-joo gets the lowdown on everything that happened to her ex and bans her children from meeting with him.

Next, Gum-ja tells Mi-joo she can tell something bad has gone on based on her look, so she embraces her and provides some comfort. Then, the elder tells her daughter, who she believes is sticking around long-term, they should “live together.”

This, naturally, will provide Mi-joo with a route toward properly connecting with her children.

Why does Trot Baek confront Young-soon and the Livestock Division?

After depositing Ye-jin’s bouncy ball, Kang-ho watches Mi-joo from afar, learning her name again. Elsewhere, Trot Baek confronts Young-soon about her pig farm, blaming the smells emanating from the area for his lack of musical work and his foul-smelling clothing. In response, the eccentric artist is spitefully told to “sue” should he have any legal issues.

Following being rejected in his plea for a dog (undoubtedly a move to please Mi-joo), Kang-ho finds himself unmotivated during his physical therapy.

Meanwhile, Tae-soo officially launches his presidential campaign, and Ha-young starts to break down. Mostly, this is due to her being told Kang-ho only wanted to marry her for revenge and because her father had lyingly said the prosecutor killed his child and wife.

As Woo-byeok asks his team to provide him with an “ace” against Tae-soo when necessary, Kang-ho admits to Young-soon that he wants a dog to show Mi-joo.

However, the pig farmer doesn’t actually believe the beautician is even back from America. Additionally, Trot Baek goes nowhere with his complaints to the Livestock Division, so finds himself throwing a tantrum in their office based on his “pursuit of happiness.”

Why does Trot Baek end up in the police station?

Next, things get hectic. Initially, Kang-ho exits the house along with a pig – one he hopes to show Mi-joo, but loses along the way.

Yet also because Lion is caught by the beautician herself eventually, leaving an awkward tension lingering before Young-soon arrives to scold her son. Then, to complement it all, Mi-joo has tea with her ex’s mother, lying about her husband’s whereabouts as a successful nail salon owner in America.

After scolding Kang-ho, then listening to his request to take care of Lion, Young-soon has to face an angered Trot Baek. He’s frustrated over crashing his car, falling into a ditch (both incidents are blamed on Kang-ho’s escapee pig), and having his vehicle disinfected. So, the musician requests one billion won yearly for the loss of song sales, royalties, etc.

In time, this blows over into physicality and then heads out to the police station when Kang-ho gets involved to protect his mother, who was being grabbed. At the station, the facts are laid bare, and it’s Trot Baek gets plenty of flack for his use of a mobile phone while driving and his lack of seatbelt protection. To add to this, more memories of law come back for Kang-ho.

As Sam-sik becomes embroiled in a fight with the man who had him imprisoned some time ago, Tae-soo warns Ha-young to stay out of his way and away from controversy too.

Plus, the presidential candidate decides he wants to “get rid” of Kang-ho, feeling threatened by his daughter’s reminder that the prosecutor regaining memories could spell danger for his ambitions.

The Good Bad Mother Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained

When left alone, a hitman comes looking for Kang-ho, hoping to kill him. Though the prosecutor is surprisingly protected by Woo-byeok’s men, ending the episode.
