We discuss the Ending of the 2023 Netflix film Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, which will contain spoilers.
The title (Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery) may seem odd because the mystery is about a fruit, but it explores many social and political issues in India. A local politician’s prized jackfruits go missing, and a young police officer who is determined to prove herself takes on the case and won’t rest until she solves it.
As a police officer and woman, she experiences a mixture of suspects, making this a difficult journey for her. Some don’t take her seriously, but the men working with her are by her side during this case.
Mahima Basor (Sanya Malhotra), who takes on the role of the cop in this film, gives a strong performance. While she navigates this case, she sees the issues that her people face on the streets while trying to solve this mystery.
The script is layered to give different perspectives while trying to solve a fun puzzle.
Mahima takes a while to solve the case, and she has her suspicions, but once the online community enters the conversation, it gets more intense. The film also makes fun of “online journalists” because they think the media is a joke and doesn’t know how to take things seriously.
As she interrogates suspects, it seems more people get involved, and other inspectors try to take over the case. Multiple cases are being filed, but every department is hyper-focused on solving this high-profile case instead.
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery Ending Explained
Does Mahima find the prime suspect?
They do find out that Amiya is the one who stole the jackfruits because her father, Birwa, exposed her during the press conference. Naturally, Mahima and her team shift the focus to finding Amiya instead of searching for the actual jackfruits. At that point, it would make more sense to find the person who orchestrated this than the prized fruit.
When Mahima asks the locals where Amiya is, she discovers she got kidnapped. Now she has to track down the kidnappers to get to Amiya. There’s a really good chase scene, and Mahima needs to get to Amiya because the kidnappers are involved in human trafficking.
Mahima does get to Amiya and reduces her. She makes the necessary arrests and brings Gulab Seth in for questioning.
What the satire does so well is create a parallel between the importance of the jackfruit case and what the police department focused on. After everything, while Amiya is in court, they switch their focus from the jackfruits to the human trafficking occurring in their community.
Without pressing further, they drop the jackfruit case (rightfully so) and move forward in finding other victims of human trafficking.
There is one shot at the end with monkeys sitting on a roof eating the jackfruits, and it’s the house of Pateria. The audience sees how absurd all of this was but also becomes educated on what could be happening within the community under their noses.
