This article discusses the potential of The Days Season 2 and the renewed or canceled status of the Netflix series.
The Days is an eight-part Netflix limited series telling the story of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. The calamity was caused by an earthquake of unprecedented scale occurring under the sea off Japan’s east coast, which resulted in a tsunami and a subsequent nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima, Japan.
The series explores this in considerable detail, sometimes to its detriment. Across its eight episodes, it depicts one disaster after another, as various unforeseen circumstances battle against the bravery and ingenuity of those still in the plant, led by its manager, Yoshida.
Here’s a quote from our review:
The Days explores these circumstances, the self-sacrificial efforts to prevent the disaster from worsening, and the extreme resourcefulness that human beings will show in the face of danger and death. But the show’s impersonal approach and fascination with details also bogs it down somewhat, taking great pains to include every relevant number, fluctuating dial, and horrifying factoid, but leaving human depth and drama somewhat by the wayside.
If you’re curious about the show’s potential future here’s everything we know.
Will there be a Season 2 of The Days on Netflix?
Renewed or canceled status: TBC
While at the time of writing Netflix have not provided official confirmation, it is incredibly unlikely that The Days will be renewed for a second season.
The show has explicitly been marketed as a limited series, which means it is intended to tell a self-contained story in a single season. While the ending of The Days makes it clear that the Fukushima disaster is still, in some sense, ongoing, the story of the disaster itself and the immediate aftermath has already been told with admirable detail here.
A relevant case study would be Chernobyl on HBO, another dramatization of a nuclear disaster that was beloved by critics and audiences alike but still ended after telling the story it wanted to tell. Expect the same thing to happen here irrespective of how well the show does for the streaming giant.
To be clear, our official stance is that The Days will not be renewed for a second season, but we’ll update this article with new information as we get it.
