Summary

In this jam-packed episode, viewers learn a lot of useful information that helps them to feel like this story is finally leading somewhere.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 9, “Conscience does make cowards of us all. I,” which contains spoilers.

Things almost took a turn for the worst last week as Chise (Atsumi Tanezaki) was the target of multiple monsters during her class camping trip.

While it wasn’t easy, with the help of several classmates and even a dangerous creature, she was able to escape with her life and the lives of her friends intact as well.

However, escaping unscathed did not come without a cost, as Chise’s cursed arm seemed to transform in a way she’s never seen before. Whether or not this transformation is bad, Chise’s not sure yet, but she’ll have to find out soon before things get worse.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 9 Recap

The episode opens with Seth saying someone in his family has collapsed. He states that he will be taking time off before leaving in his car. From there, we cut to Chise and Zoe, visiting Lucy in the infirmary, where she has been unconscious for the last ten days.

Chise finds herself especially worried about Lucy because they have no idea how or why she suddenly lost all of her magic.

Although he lies and tells Chise he doesn’t know what the voice could be, Joseph reveals that Chise actually heard the voice of a dragon. He says the dragon has gone mad, having cursed a human, and laughs, knowing Chise will never escape the feeling of “baring their fangs at an enemy” after allowing the voice to convince her to hurt someone.

Seth is Lucy’s older brother.

What book was stolen from the Forbidden Books Storage?

The book stolen from the Forbidden Books Storage was The Testament of Carnamagos. Having read it before, Elias describes it as a book that has the ability to put the living in mortal danger by describing how to take in the life force and magic powers of others, how to create and destroy immortals, and how to bring back the dead.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 9 Ending Explained

What is the Webster tragedy?

The Webster tragedy describes an incident where the Webster family, known for replicating magic books and binding them with special spider silk, was murdered eight years prior. They also had all of their special spiders stolen as well.

The only Webster family members left alive were Lucy and Seth, but he’d already been driven out of the family by then. According to Simeon Paladilhe, a professor at the college, it seems since then; no one has been able to figure out who committed the murders.

The episode ends with two werewolf-like creatures suddenly kidnapping and murdering someone who appears to be Seth’s driver and or guard.

Finally, after several weeks of wondering, it finally feels like we have an actual story to work with. I can see a plot forming and actual conflicts arising. Suddenly I’m much more invested in where this season is going.

Although today’s episode still had a few of those random, mysterious scenes that don’t explain anything, there was also a lot of valuable information to be taken in. It’s frustrating when you see that the writers have the ability to craft an episode with twists and surprises while still keeping some mystery and intrigue, but for some reason, they did not choose to do that for the first half of the season. It feels like we could’ve cut half the episodes from before the field trip, and it would’ve made no difference.

Regardless, I’m excited to see the series starting to pick up and make sense. I’m curious to see what happens in these last few episodes and where these new developments lead.
