In You Do You, Merve is a bohemian hippie living her best life as an aspiring fashion designer who is about to get a rude awakening.
Merve’s mother, Nevra, told her their building was being sold. Nerva’s ex-husband, Merve’s father, has their home still in his name because Nevra never technically divorced him.
You Do You Ending Explained
Now that the entire Kültür family is endangered of losing everything, Merve takes it upon herself to make things right. She set out with her friends, including her best friends Nil and Murat, creating an application called “Soulmates,” an application for people sick of the vain and shallow “swipe” left or right variety regarding dating.
The only catch? Everyone wears a mask, so you cannot see anyone’s face.
Who is Anil?
Anil is a bored billionaire who stumbles upon this (not-so) new concept of dating that prioritizes communication over vain hookups. Intrigued, Anil decides to become an investor and reaches out to Nil, who arranges a meeting with him. They plan to present their idea in a Shark Tank-like fashion, with everyone wearing masks meticulously crafted by Murat.
However, before meeting the group outside Anil’s Ready to Wear headquarters, Merve, craving coffee, crosses paths with him and accidentally spills her coffee on him. This leads to an awkward and less-than-ideal encounter. Merve is embarrassed when she discovers that Anil is also at the meeting.
Inexplicably, Anil offers Merve a job at Ready to Wear and becomes an investor in Soulmates.
Why does Anil hire Merve?
Anil hires Merve to make her life difficult and instructs his assistant to make her life a living hell, leading Merve to quit eventually. However, his overt action to get revenge on someone for a relatively minor offense seems out of place. That’s because this is all part of a much larger plan.
However, Anil soon starts to find Merve interesting and starts to intentionally talk to her on Soulmates wearing a “wolf” mask.
Who bought Merve’s family building?
As it turns out, Anil purchased the Kült family apartment building. Despite not living there for decades, Merve’s father still had his name on the deed but faced financial difficulties and sold it to Anil. The Kült family originally acquired the building from a man named Gürman, who happened to be Anil’s father when he encountered financial troubles.
Nevra’s ex-husband finds this ironic, but as the family matriarch, she knows better.
What is Nevra’s connection to Anil?
Nevra has an affair with Anil’s father, and he holds her responsible for his family’s financial downfall. Nevra, a journalist, investigated the elder Gürman for engaging in illegal import and export activities. According to Anil, he believes that Nevra investigated his father, had a relationship with him, and then exposed his criminal activities, leading to his family’s impoverishment.
Nevra disproves Anil’s belief that his father is a criminal by presenting evidence and sharing her father’s love letters. Additionally, she warns Anil to keep his distance from her daughter, Merve.
How do Merve and Anil get back together?
While nothing is explicitly stated by the end of the movie, Merve tells Anil that everyone deserves a second chance when he asks her again if she will give him another opportunity. They walk away, holding hands, amidst a shoot for Ready to Wear. We believe Merve decides to give him a second chance after discovering Anil’s secret plan and sabotaging Soulmates by transforming it into a subscription site, resulting in all the users quitting.
Feeling remorseful for his actions, Anil confesses his feelings to Merve during Nil and Murat’s wedding. He admits that he was “blinded” by revenge and was afraid of strong women.
