We discuss 10 Movies like The Meg you must watch. Add these well-recommended and highly-rated films to your watch list.
A prehistorical Megalodon is discovered by a group of scientists down the Marianna Trench, and soon it will start eating its way through Earth’s oceans. There’s only one man who can stop him, and he is played by Jason Statham.
The Meg is the ultimate fun, turn-your-brain-off blockbuster summer movie, and with a sequel coming out soon, if you have seen it recently and are looking for other recommendations to watch, here are ten similar movies to The Meg.
10 Movies like The Meg you must watch
Jaws (1975)
We start the list with the mother of all shark movies and also the mother of the summer blockbuster. Steven Spielberg’s Jaws changed the game for the entire industry back in 1975; if we are talking about similar movies to The Meg, there is no way we cannot mention Jaws; there is no Meg without Jaws first.
The film’s premise, one of the simplest in film history, follows a town that is terrorized by a shark navigating its shores and its efforts to try to combat the threat.
Jurassic Park (1993)
The next entry in the list also hails from Steven Spielberg and is widely described as “Jaws on Land.” Instead of running away from a terrifying shark, our protagonists are escaping from dinosaurs.
The film takes place on an island where a billionaire has finally made his lifelong dream come true — he made dinosaurs come back. But things don’t go exactly as he planned because life always finds a way.
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
A team of scientists is trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s disease by studying mako sharks in a remote research facility. But during their time there, a group of intelligent, genetically-engineered sharks starts rampaging the facility, and they must find a way to survive.
The cast is led by Saffron Burrows, Samuel L. Jackson, Thomas Jane, and Michael Rapaport.
Sharknado (2013)
If we are talking dumb shark movies similar to The Meg just for fun, there is no way we cannot list the ultimate C-movie, 2013’s Sharknado. Made for TV only and the first of a very ridiculized franchise.
The story focuses on a big hurricane that devastates and floods Los Angeles, leaving the streets inundated with sharks from the ocean that start wreaking havoc as they go.
San Andreas (2015)
Regarding disaster-but-fun movies, 2015’s San Andreas follows the effort by a rescue-chopper pilot, played by Dwayne Johnson, after a massive earthquake devastates California.
While the subject matter is not exactly lighthearted, the film takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the story and even feels hopeful by the end, despite the horrific nature of what went down.
The Shallows (2016)
Other similar movies to The Meg include this near-90-minute horror-thriller from Jaume Collet-Serra. The story follows surfer Nancy (Blake Lively), who, 200 yards away from shore, is attacked by a white shark.
The story immediately becomes a race against time as she tries to get to the shallows before being eaten alive by the creature. It is a straightforward premise (much like Jaws, let’s be honest).
47 Meters Down (2017)
Much like what happened in some of the entries above, the premise of 47 Meters Down is straightforward. Two sisters go on a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they venture into a shark cage 47 meters underwater.
But, as usual in all of these similar movies to The Meg, things don’t go as planned, and they are suddenly trapped there. Soon, they will start running out of oxygen.
Rampage (2018)
We are leaving the shark-themed movies part of the list to start talking about other stories about wild animals terrorizing humans.
This Dwayne Johnson-led 2018 fun video game adaptation follows a giant gorilla who becomes infected with a dangerous pathogen and starts going on a building-destroying rampage through San Diego; the only man capable of stopping him is The Rock, who had formed a special bond with him as the gorilla’s caretaker.
Crawl (2019)
Similar to San Andreas, 2019’s B-movie Crawl takes a very realistic scenario and runs with it just for fun. When a category-five hurricane reaches Florida, Haley must go back and rescue his father from his house.
But as nature catches up with them, the house is flooded, and a group of dangerous reptiles starts stalking them.
Godzilla v Kong (2021)
When we are talking about similar movies to The Meg about prehistorical creatures finding their way through today’s world, there is no better example in recent memory than Adam Wingard’s Godzilla v Kong, the culmination of a four-film arc that included two Godzillas and one Kong films, and where humans are mere spectators of the world-altering event; until they decide to interfere.
The title says it all about the film’s plot, and if it hasn’t sold you yet, there’s not much we can say that will.
