Here is our review of the Hulu reality series Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs Season 1, which does not contain spoilers.
I’ll be the first to admit that any reality shows documenting the trials and tribulations of the rich and famous are not my jam, but I have experience watching them since I love my spouse and need a happy house. However, the Hulu American reality series Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs has a twist that (somewhat) sets this series apart.
A Kardashians-inspired series through a social lens of being wealthy, beautiful, accomplished, and Muslim all at the same time.
The series follows the Sozahdahs sisters, Muslim American women who “navigate” society’s social expectations and ones set by their heritage. There are ten sisters — yes, you read that right — and a subsection of this blessed sisterhood calls themselves “The Wolfpack,” a group of energetic, young, and accomplished women living their best life.
Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs Season 1 Review
You have the leader of the pack, and the fifth sister Shakur is the group’s undisputed leader. A former model, actress, and recording artist, she has been married to her Muslim husband, who has drug dependency issues. Jamila is sister number seven, a physician’s assistant going through a messy divorce, who happens to be pregnant, but who’s the father?
The PA stays with her three younger sisters in a home called “The Wolfpad,” which is undoubtedly leading, keeping one foot as a party girl and the other in adulthood.
The youngest, Hamida, is that party girl who doubles as an online clinical therapist. She is the most interesting person because she is currently exploring her sexuality, which is an issue with her faith and maybe with her family.
There are many others, but the gist is a series where most of these women are, in fact, remarkable, as they are accomplished professionals, living lives their fathers helped provide them when moving to America. However, we’re watching them debate issues of having a baby outside of wedlock and LGBTQ+ relationships.
These sisters’ personal ideals make for interesting reality television. Especially, as one puts it, having to live up to elders’ expectations. (They quote the Quran scripture that says heaven is beneath your mother’s feet).
And the series also does something I didn’t expect — most conversations don’t have a spontaneous feel, nor do most feel inauthentic when going for a heartfelt moment.
I have a feeling this is a product of some talented editors, but this makes a difference in the overall quality. Whether it’s Hamida amusingly referring to “aerial” yoga as “areola” or a bluntly honest reaction to personal matters, the conversations at least feel refreshing and real.
There’s also the loss of their father, who was a victim of a murder, which brings some black cloud over the women.
Is Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs Season 1 good or bad?
Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs is a good reality series and will have legs. However, while I admire the underlining themes of being a sisterhood of the first-generation of Afghanistan immigrants, this should not be confused with a hard look at growing up Afghany in America.
Anyone who is a fan of the genre will enjoy the show because of its relatable family dynamics while living a lifestyle most are unaccustomed to.
Is Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs Season 1 worth watching?
Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs is worth watching and deserves a mild recommendation for fans of shows that explore the lives of the rich and famous. Hulu might have the next reality streaming obsession on its hands.
However, it’s highly doubtful that the show will reach the level of the Kardashians. The majority of the cast members are medical and mental health professionals, and I don’t see a billion-dollar empire in their future. While I have never been a fan of this genre, my personal tastes are not the point here. This series is made for people who will enjoy it and appreciate the fresh angle it presents.
