Summary

Although this episode had several forgettable moments, it ended on a high with noticeable tension and several interesting cliffhangers.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 11, “A small leak will sink a great ship. I,” which contains spoilers.

After surviving a terrifying werewolf attack last week, Chise (Atsumi Tanezaki) now owes a favor to the Hound Dogs that helped her escape. There’s a chance that despite their original arrangement, the Hound Dogs may ask Chise for more than she’s willing to give.

For a girl that’s known for trying to sacrifice herself, this could prove to be a dangerous situation if Chise can’t manage to hold her ground. At the same time, with Philomela’s (Maki Kawase) grandmother stirring up trouble for Chise and her friends, it seems things will only get worse before they get better.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 11 Recap

The episode opens with Chise, Elias, and Marielle discussing what has happened to Lucy and how similar it is to what happened to Simeon. They realize that no matter how much magic they supply her with, it is just going to keep being drained.

Upon learning she collapsed again, Zoe comes to visit Lucy in the infirmary in the middle of the night. While there, she asks to pet his snakes, as they remind her of the spiders stolen from her family.

Do the Hound Dogs accept Chise’s offering?

As per their contract, the Hound Dogs accept Chise’s sheep offering when she comes to repay them for the werewolves’ safe passage. However, Hazel warns her that in the future, she should not be so quick to try and make alternate deals with the dogs for her own safety.

What is the waste tower?

The waste tower is one of seven buildings that make up the college. According to Isaac, that’s where they keep the results of botched sorcery experiments and things they can’t get rid of, while Rian says it’s where you can find rare ores and herbs. However, according to Torrey, it’s where people he refers to as the “undergrounders” reside.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 11 Ending Explained

After encouraging Lucy to rest, Chise, Isaac, Rian, and Zoe volunteer to take up her job at the waste tower instead. Already down there to work are Philomela and a man named Fabio Zaccheroni.

As she recovers, a teacher named Ms. Wachman comes to visit Lucy. She tells Lucy that she can handle today’s job at the waste tower on her own, causing Lucy to realize something is wrong when Ms. Wachman does not mention running into her friends.

The episode ends with Philomela telling Chise she should watch out for Fabio as Philomela’s grandmother receives a letter saying her granddaughter is withdrawing from college.

With next week being the season finale, this episode could’ve felt more exciting. Several scenes, like Chise’s talk with Hazel, probably could’ve been shortened. Still, it managed to pick up the pace toward the end and set viewers up for what should be an entertaining final episode.

There are still more than a few storylines just hanging in the air, which has me wondering why the studio only opted for a twelve-episode season. I doubt there’s any way they can answer all of the fans lingering questions, so I’m curious to see just where this storyline with Chise and her friends in the waste tower leads, as this seems like a strange time to introduce a new villain.

Here’s hoping next week’s finale answers some of the viewers’ unanswered questions.
