Where was the series The Fully Monty filmed – a breakdown of filming locations

Where was the series The Full Monty filmed? We discuss the 2023 series and its filming locations.

The Full Monty was a movie way back in 1997 that captured the hearts and minds of cinemagoers, not just in the UK, but right around the world. The comedy is now considered a bit of a classic, with its heartwarming story and great soundtrack.

The film was directed by Peter Cattaneo and managed to tap into the zeitgeist of the time, resonating with a disgruntled UK public, traumatized by the death of Princess Diana, fed up with political sleaze and a general election looming, and wondering over the transfer of Hong Kong.

It was a time of unrest and a film like The Full Monty awkwardly shuffled its way onto the big screen, and did what film does best — transported its audience away from the daily routine and left us feeling uplifted, just for a short while.

The film was a success in its release and soon managed to find an international audience too.

It received an Academy Award for Best Picture, and surprised everyone, proving a low-budget, simple, story-driven movie with great acting is always a winning formula.

The film has recently been in the news again, with a TV series sequel dropping on Disney+ and you can read all about that right here on Ready Steady Cut. However this revealing article has another pressing question to answer: Where was the Disney+ 2023 TV series The Full Monty filmed?

Where was the series The Full Monty filmed – a breakdown of filming locations

South Yorkshire, UK

The original movie takes place in Sheffield in the North of England in the UK.

During the mid-’90s, Sheffield would suffer from the closure of steel mills that would employ much of the local community, leaving many people unemployed.

The TV series stays true to this location and most of the production takes place in the same area.

Filming in the location where the action takes place lends a lot of authenticity, and as the closure of the steel mills was a real-life event that launches the narrative, it was important that this area was heavily featured in the film, and now the series.

The UK, unlike America, is a much smaller country, and as a result, many people are very familiar with cities such as Sheffield.

To keep the screenplay genuine, it was very important to keep this location, as the area itself could almost be described as a character in the film too.

The Yorkshire Post in the UK would list some of the iconic locations used in the filming of the Disney+ series.

Idsworth Road Cinema, Sheffield

The cinema would make appearances in both the original film and the new series.

It was presented as the working men’s club that the now famous dance would take place in, and can be seen in the new show too although the building has been damaged by a fire.

Norton Aerodrome, Sheffield

This former RAF base would be the hub of activity for the film crew for the shoot.

The area is set to be the site for new housing, but the production set up camp there and some filming was done nearby.

South Street Park

Spotted in the opening two episodes, this area has been used for other shows too.

Parkwood Springs, Sheffield

This area has some great views of the whole city and is easily accessible from Kelham Island.
