We discuss the ending of the 2023 Netflix anime film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, which will contain spoilers.
It is a movie that Netflix wanted to bring in the fanbase to generate traction on the streaming platform. It is a long-running anime that many have loved over the years.
The animation is gorgeous, and it follows suit of the stories within the manga and television series. It makes sense for Netflix to take on an anime that made an impact and has a fanbase to drive more people to watch it.
Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is a world where magic is everything. Asta is a boy who was born with no magic. He aims to become the “Wizard King” and wants to overcome adversity, prove his power, and keep his oath to his friends.
Like any other hero’s journey, Asta ventures out of the Clover Kingdom and plans to battle Yuno, his long-time foe. On this journey, he faces obstacles, which almost play out like demons from his past life.
In this very Charles Dickens-esque story, Asta faces the ghosts of his past in the form of Conrad Leto, a former Wizard King. With him, Leto brings the most feared Wizard Kings. By doing this, the former Wizard Kings prepare Asta for his journey ahead and what would become of him if he took on the mantle.
The ghosts of former Wizard kings help him on this journey, and he understands the history of his kingdom and how far they have come.
Multiple fights do break out as Asta, Yuno, and other knights and captains fight the Wizard Kings’ powers. The Imperial Sword is probably the most important weapon to use against the Wizard Kings, and its importance is shown exceptionally well throughout the third act of this film.
What is fascinating about the magic in this anime is how one can take someone else’s magic. There are two sides to the spectrum in the kingdom; magic and anti-magic, which makes this interesting when Asta faces Conrad.
On the other side of Asta, battling all of this, Conrad formed his own crew. Edward, Princia and Jester are with him and want to make their own space, a kingdom, where they will be accepted and ruled.

Do Asta and Conrad finally fight?
In the end, Conrad and Asta have the big battle that Asta had initially sought out when he began his journey. As the two of them fight, Conrad tells him that it’s easier if Asta joins the former King’s fight in a taunting way. After going on this journey and having difficulty understanding his past with his kingdom, he questions everything Conrad says.
Asta goes deeper into the Black Clover grimoire to defeat Conrad and gains the upper hand for a short period. After holding him off and making the ghost kings disappear, Conrad outdoes him by doing a forbidden spell. But Asta harnesses anti-magic, which is then funnelled into a powerful sword. While it was hard at first to hold off Conrad, Asta does end up defeating his spell.
Does Yuno defeat Jester?
Yuno, in the end, does take on Jester out of the three that are fighting with Conrad. Of course, there is plenty of bad talk between them as they set up the fight against each other. Jester taunts him by saying that he’s powerful and that it’s pointless to even attempt a fight with him. Yuno isn’t alone in this fight, and he harnesses powers from others. This shows the unity that they have behind them. What’s interesting about this fight is that Yuno does put Jester to the test, especially after how highly he spoke about his fighting abilities.
Yuno does find a different angle and uses similar tactics as Asta to try and defeat Jester, but the difference of power is evident, and Yuno does bring down the percentage of Jester’s magic, which is a bonus for all of them in the end. Jester is too powerful for Yuno to take him down, but he does stay down for a bit longer to help everyone out.
