Summary

Tom Segura delivers one of the best joke-for-joke comedy specials of 2023. It’s a pure comedy gold that you don’t want to miss.

This review of the Netflix film Tom Segura: Sledgehammer does not contain spoilers.

Tom Segura has been doing stand-up comedy since 2001. Since then, he has made a lasting footprint in the comedy world with seven stand-up comedy specials. He returns to the Netflix stage for his fifth special for the streaming platform with Tom Segura: Sledgehammer.

Tom Segura: Sledgehammer review and plot summary

Tom Segura: Sledgehammer is the latest stand-up special from Segura, who tells jokes about raising his two sons, his love for Brad Pitt, and lessons he learned sharing gummies with his mother.

He opens with a bang by asking if they will stop taking down the Confederate statues. He followed this up with a bit about meeting a supermodel and how they are equally as freak as a seven-footer because they are unbelievably good-looking in person. Segura closes with a joke that gets a huge laugh — it’s a perfectly constructed opening to reel you into the special.

Segura has the perfect way of intertwining his jokes, equating to some incredibly funny callbacks. What made it even better was how he incorporated jokes about his father’s final words into jokes later about his kids.

Speaking of his kids, nobody on this planet pushes the boundaries about telling jokes quite like Segura. By now, we all know Segura has a highly messed up sense of humor, and my goodness, does he tell one of the sickest yet funniest jokes I’ve ever heard. I don’t doubt that it will be one of the most talked about jokes of the year, good and bad.

There is something about Segura’s body language that makes his jokes that much funnier. It’s not outlandish or over the top, but quite subtle, just enough to add a little oomph to the joke to set it over the top. Another thing is the deadpan look on his face through some of his raunchier jokes, and it’s perfect.

Very few comics anymore get on the stage, tell jokes, make you laugh, and get off the stage. This year has really seen the rebirth of comedy that I’ve missed so much. From Matt Rife’s Only Fans to John Mulaney’s Baby J and now with Tom Segura’s Sledgehammer, you have comedians getting on the stage without a care in the world about “cancel culture” and telling jokes to make audiences laugh. Some may see it as crossing lines, but turn it off if you don’t like it.

Is Tom Segura: Sledgehammer good or bad?

Tom Segura: Sledgehammer is a masterclass of storytelling from one of the best comedians in the game. Punch line after punch line will have you in tears laughing at Segura’s incredibly dark jokes. It’s one of the best stand-up specials of not just this year but the decade.

Is Tom Segura: Sledgehammer worth watching?

It’s easy to recommend checking out Tom Segura: Sledgehammer if you are a fan of his or not. The jokes, the delivery, and the humor deliver everything you want from a stand-up special and more. It’s one of the most entertaining things you will watch all year.
