Who is Jacen Syndulla in Star Wars? We explain who the Star Wars: Rebels character is, and if he will appear in the upcoming Disney+ show Ahsoka.
The upcoming Ahsoka series will feature several familiar faces jumping into live-action from Star Wars: Rebels, like the Twi’lek Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the Mandalorian Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Chiss Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and the murderous droid, Chopper (Dave Filoni).
But one face that’s less well-known that could be joining them is Jacen Syndulla, and thanks to a set reveal by LEGO it’s indeed likely that audiences will be seeing him. Here’s an explainer of who the character is, and whether or not he will appear in the show.
Who is Jacen Syndulla in Star Wars?
Jacen Syndulla is the son of Hera Syndulla and Jedi Knight Caleb Dune aka Kanan Jarrus, and was introduced in the very last episode of Rebels season four in the epilogue section. In Ahsoka, he will be around 12 years old, as he was born in 0BBY. The show will take place around 12ABY. He is a human-Twi’lek hybrid, though his looks suggest he’s more human.
Jacen has only been mentioned once outside of Rebels, in the book Victory’s Price, the third book in the Alphabet Squadron trilogy. This reveals that he and his mother Hera were separated during the final months of the war against the Empire, but doesn’t say anything more. Hera Syndulla is a character that’s featured heavily throughout the trilogy, in command of the Lodestar Acclamator-class warship. Unfortunately, the ship was destroyed by the 204th Imperial TIE Fighter Wing and the Star Destroyer Edict, so it won’t be in Ahsoka.
Will Jacen Syndulla be in Ahsoka?
Right now, it’s unknown if Jacen Syndulla will appear in Ahsoka. In the first trailer that’s been released, Jacen didn’t make an appearance and wasn’t even mentioned. But as this series is essentially Rebels season five (as confirmed by Dave Filoni himself), and picks up the story and characters from that show, it’s likely he will be at least mentioned.
A LEGO set of the Ghost, the ship the main characters in Rebels use, features a mini-figure of Jacen. This set is based on the Ahsoka series, so it’s likely that Jacen will indeed be present. LEGO has made an interesting change to the character; instead of having green hair, the character now has darker hair.
This change is likely to have been because it’s easier to keep the existing hair color of the actor who’s playing him but could have been done for any number of different reasons. It’s also not known if this has been done just for the LEGO set, or in the show too.
Is Jacen Syndulla a Jedi?
Despite being the son of Caleb Dune, Jacen has yet to display any signs of Force sensitivity, and isn’t training to be a Jedi. He might start to show signs of being one with the force in Ahsoka, and train under Ezra Bridger when he’s found. Another scenario is that if he is force-sensitive he might go to train at Luke’s Jedi Academy, as seen in The Book Of Boba Fett. But hopefully for Jacen it’s the former because Luke’s Jedi Academy is doomed to be destroyed by Kylo Ren, along with its students.
This is just speculation, as it might turn out that Syndulla isn’t Force sensitive at all.
